TRANSFORMING "SOCIAL" RELATIONSHIPS, INSTITUTIONS & BEHAVIOUR

A transformed individual is one who awarefully experiences his truth
and is free of constraint to speak it.
A transformed environment is one where truth can be heard
and willingly accommodated.

Before launching into the body of this enquiry, let me make one thing clear: I don't see "transformed/untransformed" or "aware/unaware" or "conscious/unconscious" as either "on" or "off"  states, but as extreme ends of a constantly shifting continuum. As individuals we all have moments of "got-it", and other moments of deep darkness, and the same goes for any structures or systems we join and identify with, either voluntarily or out of an accident of birth. We both know that real life ain't as simple as black or white, but I examplify the extremes for the sake of simplicity and clarity in the hope that you might, as I did, find some enlightenment from looking at our social behaviour from another perspective.......

Relationships and institutions, at any given moment, are either creating space or restricting it. Those that predominantly restrict have a limited life span; they carry within their nature the seeds of their own termination. If you are opposing one of these restrictive structures, however, you may have to be very patient. Nature isn't always in a hurry to re-balance itself. There are lessons available in imbalance and strife. If you go to war on structures and organisations that restrict your freedom, you will only reinforce their self-perceived validity and prolong their existence. For example, let's take the so-called "war on terror" -- a political device that keeps people afraid for their safety and sanctifies socially sanctioned murder. In the short term it may seem like the obvious solution. From a mid-term perspective it just creates more and better-resourced terrorists. In the long run, I suspect our grandchildren and great-grandchildren may look back at us and ask "How could they have been so blindly stupid?"

FUNCTIONING IN A STATE OF "MIND"

When individuals, relationships, families and other institutions are untransformed, they manifest themselves in the Mind state. They come from, and generate a Survival attitude, and they operate from Positions and Oppositions that they have to be right about. They restrict.

It is my experience, both as a trainee and as a trainer of others, that individuals who have experienced some transformation may well strike difficulty when returning from training to normal life. In the main, they will be returning to family, social, cultural, religious and work environments where open expressions of truth may not even be comfortably tolerated, let alone encouraged. The chrysalis may experience a restriction that can be deadly dangerous to his/her transforming.

All human social structures are created by people who share certain basic, predominant mindsets of ideas and attitudes. Wherever people get together for a purpose, no matter how well-defined or vague it might be, they are attracted by a thought, an idea, or a feeling that they are all contemplating. Mind being what it is, the social structure will do whatever it deems necessary to foster and protect its mind state, even to the extent of eliminating any of its members who transgress or threaten the validity of that mind state. At the first sign of threat, members will close ranks and attempt to "de-brief" the awakening individual. If that fails, the recalcitrant will be ostracised. The level of manipulation and control exercised over the breakaway, or anyone who may be tempted to support him, can escalate to levels of physical, mental and emotional cruelty and viciousness. I don't care how enlightened we think we are, neither your mind nor mine happily tolerates any ideas contrary to its own. Mind will do whatever it needs to kill those ideas including - if needs be - the person harbouring those ideas.

This is serious stuff. At a personal level, some of the things we have to be right about can seriously damage our own minds and bodies. Couples, families, cultures, religions and whole nations go to war for generations, just to protect the socially agreed mind sets that its members identify with.

This phenomenon, by the way, is not limited to human social structures. It is natural.

RELIGION, STATE AND FAMILY

In an untransformed state, societies and their members sell and trade Aliveness in return for a promise of basic Survival. Governments, religions, families and education systems ultimately fail to do what they were set up to do. This is not a criticism: it's an observation that, once untransformed individuals clot into a coalescence of like-minded individuals, the days of that grouping are numbered. They can buy additional time -- perhaps centuries of it (eg. the Roman empire) -- by becoming very skilled at hiding, justifying and perpetuating what they are not doing, and using Fear and outright coercion to maintain dominance.

Like the individuals who create and maintain "the system", social structures conspire with each other in the Mind state, pretending unity but fostering division; pretending openness but fostering secrecy in the name of "security"; pretending to champion independence and freedom but fostering acquiescence; pretending progress but entrenching fear of survival. Instead of being activities to generate healthy physical, mental, emotional and spiritual life, politics, religions, teaching institutions and family "values" become self-perpetuating ends within themselves.

Conscious individuals within restrictive and restricted social environments lose space to freely or fully express their individuality. The environment doesn't validate them; it's support is negative. For example, the Roman empire's persecution of the Christians actually reinforced their survival instincts. Now, it is true that we shouldn't NEED positive validation, but after a while chronic, persistent opposition can get to us -- we are only human!

It's a sad reality that less consciously aware people are not friendly to the idea that life works, and that, from another perspective, their lives actually are  working, and that they are within a whisker of experiencing relationships that are meaningful and nurturing. They're often not even receptive to the possibility that there is perspective other than the one they're stuck on. And there's very little you can do about that! It's far more popular to buy into a social reality of Scarcity and Lack -- ("Everyone knows that.........")

The same limiting social environment, grants plenty of space for being slick and clever, manipulative and successful. And if you're not, it will hook you onto the public teat for being socially incompetent, stupid, and a total victim.  It gives classes and awards for one; and rewards the other with "special-needs" status and support, debilitating themselves and the support system. If you're in the middle, you're expected to work hard, support the system, and cop whatever titbits the system throws your way.

Social consciousness is largely supportive of both extremes. Unfortunately, such an environment is not a very healthy place for transformation. Conscious Awareness is ultimately very threatening to any Mind state, including Social Un-consciousness. People who choose to think and feel for themselves tend to be freer, and less likely to be manipulated or controlled. They are a threat to the gossamer of social fabric.

So, if you bring your consciousness into conflict with an unconscious relationship, institution or environment, don't be surprised when it automatically generates survival behaviour from threatened members. We all identify with clubs we join -- and take it personally, to a greater or lesser extent, when someone doesn't play by the rules. If you find yourself under fire, it might be worth your while considering moving out of range. As I said before, restrictive social structures are  dinosaurs that just haven't laid down yet. Quantum leaps in evolution don't ever emanate from any safe centre; the best you can hope for from there is incremental change. Transformation origin-ates from the renegades -- those individuals who step outside the boundaries of social agreement (cf. Jonathan Livingstone Seagull) Moreover, the ultimate survivors in all of evolutionary history have been those who adapt best to change, not those who resist it. Existence is not kind to resistance (haven't you noticed?)

LIVING BEYOND SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS

We are a lot of things that need a "Yes" from us, and "social beings" is one of them. To be all that we are, we're looking for a way to incorporate our need for social interaction, without compromising our freedom. Strangely and ironically enough, saying "Yes" to our limitations is the way to go. Anything we deny being, and being part of, makes us less than what we are, and keeps us stuck there until we get that we are "this, too".

And then there is more.......

EFFECTING SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

Social change is fine, as far as it goes. The problem is that it doesn't go far. Change usually comes as cosmetic tinkering, another lean-to, more incremental addenda to the staus quo, often imposed as part of some political wheeler-dealing, without a groundswell of revolutionary energy to underpin it. The cover and the cast may alter, and the decor may look different, but the story turns out to be "more of pretty much the same."

Social transformation can be well described as "an idea whose time has come". An example of what I mean might be the appearance of "fire", or the "wheel". In the light of observations like "The Hundredth Monkey", it's highly unlikely that one single being "invented" the wheel; rather that wheel-like objects appeared in use more or less simoultaneously across the planet: "wheel" was an idea whose time had come. In more recent times, I'm reminded of the break- dancing phenomenon that swept through the ghettos of New York and Chicago in the 70's and 80's. Break-dancing had been around in a very minor way in mid- 60's Harlem, but at the height of nationwide deadly street-gang warfare a decade later, it suddenly appeared en masse to revolutionise life on the competitive ghetto streets of a whole nation. It was an idea whose time had come.

What needs to happen before social Transformation will take over from social change? Large-scale breakdown. Breakdown comes before break-through, I think the question could be --

How bad has this got to get
Before we'll open up,
Fire the caretakers,
And allow the architects to take over
And let , first, the wreckers
And then the builders to move in?

Sometimes we get lucky. Nature gets in ahead of us with some kind of "catastrophe", forcing us to creatively re-think the whole deal from the ground up (eg. a) Sicilian peasants living near Mt. Etna. b) My wife leaving me.) And sometimes our stupidity knows no bounds (eg. a) rebuilding New Orleans right where it just got drowned; or b) appointing someone to fix a problem who is actually part of the problem). We'd do well to re-think our attitude to "disasters". If it were not for cataclysmic earthquakes and volcanoes, you and I would be breathing with gills -- there wouldn't be a skerrick of land left above sea level by now.

Any state of being arrived at through transformation is naturally expressive and expansive. It demands transformed relationships between the people involved, and a transforming environment within which to thrive. Breakdancing broke upon an environment and a generation that was eager to open itself to anything that would break the tyranny of street warfare. Only in such freer conditions can a person adequately express his/her transforming individuality.

This is where the impetus for true social transformation arises -- from individuals, relationships, or families, who have first transformed themselves. That is the first requirement for social transformation.

The second requirement for social transformation is that the transforming individuals or groups must engage creatively with the society in which they exist. Skiving off into a cave for decades on end may help their personal progress and shield them from the adverse reactions I spoke of above; it may even be something beautiful to watch and experience, but it isn't going to produce social transformation. There's a helluva lot of wasted holiness tucked away in safe crevices all over the world. If you want to make a difference, you have to stick your neck out. If Mother Theresa had stayed in the nunnery, or Jesus had claimed his permanent parking spot in the temple, Calcutta and the world would be none the wiser.

There's a third requirement for any transformation, social or otherwise. A siege must be laid on Mind, both individually and collectively. An open space, a context must be created in which enlightening individuals can experiment and live fully. And it is up to the enlightening people to do it -- we are the ones with the awareness of what is required and what is against us. A basic prerequisite of all creating is to firstly create space for it. In the case of social re-formation, it must happen at all levels --- individual, family, in partner relationships, organisation-institutional, and cultural-societal.

What are the most significant areas where socially sanctioned restrictions manifest themselves, to the detriment of social evolution?
  • Communication - mass and interpersonal
  • Relation-shit
  • Family openness and connection (lol)
  • Education -- the process of exploring and discovering our inner intellectual, emotional, and spiritual resources.
  • Industrial relations
  • Legal proceedings
  • Spiritual expression
  • Morality and ethics in all levels of endeavour
  • Politics of all kinds
  • The way we treat our less-advantaged, our minorities, and refugees
What are some of the innumerable symptoms of a positional, divisive, socially sanctioned Mind-state?
  • An inability to communicate what we think and feel
  • An inability to experience intimate heart-connection
  • A social acceptance of pretence and deceit, sometimes in the name of "tact" or "diplomacy" or "pragmatism" -- socially sanctioned forms of lying
  • A denial of the withholding of information as Dishonesty. (Trying to get the truth out of a politician can be like pulling teeth without anaesthetic!)
  • The assumption in bureaucracies and corporations that their function is to  control or "massage" information, rather than provide it.
  • A pathological fear of acknowledging mistakes.
  • Avoidance of accountability
  • A phony, soul-less facade of "correctness". (Have you ever attended an inter-departmental enquiry in a government, or quasi-governmental bureaucracy? The room drips with "polite niceness")
  • A reliance on emotionally manipulative concepts like obligation, duty, moral imperatives, expectations and "shoulds" in order to control the behaviour of others.
  • Rampant free-lunching -- all the way from the queue at your nearest Centrelink office to the Town Hall, to Parliament House and Government offices. There are now more people with their snouts in the trough than there are people replenishing it. To use another simile, the horse is riding the jockey!
THE BUREAUCRATIC MIND-SET

One result of a socially sanctioned Mind-set is a phenomenon we call "bureaucracy". When "social" creates a structure to assist its members and puts people living in Mind in charge of it, it will not be long before the structure, just like the egos that created it. will hijack the process. Everyone -- staff and clients included -- soon becomes required to serve the resulting bureaucracy, and woe betide those who don't toe every line.

A hallmark of bureaucracy is a lot of "ritual busy-ness", behaviour  which goes through the motions, but does not serve the purpose of the endeavour. I have a story to tell which nutshells why Change is not going to work -- why Transformation is desperately needed.........

I was tour-managing a theatrical show around Tasmania. At 9am one morning I fronted up as expected to the theatre in New Norfolk. This theatre happens to be on the campus of, and run by, a local university. I was there to set up the stage and lighting for the performance that evening. I was introduced to the caretaker who opened the lighting box and fly towers for me. No stage hands? No. And then he informed he was about to depart to take care of other duties, and that he would be going off-duty at 5.30pm and would return to lock up. I was taken aback. "But we have a show tonight," I protested. "Yes, I know," he replied. "You set your lighting, and I'll show you the switch backstage where you turn the lights on and off." I tried to explain to him that the show was actually quite complicated, with something over 150 lighting cues in the second half alone. I needed to use the lighting console during the show. He couldn't see why. Neither could his superior.

Bureaucracies were created to serve. In reality, they restrict and control, often in quite obscenely ludicrous ways (a camel is a horse, designed by a bureaucratic  committee). Bureaucrcies develop systems that, in turn, create busy-work (work that keeps people occupied but not productive), efforting, struggle, red-tape, complexity, and output that fails to generate satisfaction for anybody. People who cannot be significant settle for being "special" and get themselves into a bureaucracy where they can position themselves in such a way where nothing can move without their say-so. It has been noted that God created the world in 7 days, but he had the advantage of working alone.

The "care-taker" (a misnomer if ever I heard one!) at New Norfolk was "just doing his job", without any broad concept whatever of the Context and Purpose of his job. He had sole technical responsibility for a theatre, but  working office hours!? He was one prime example of someone way out of synch with the Context of his role. He was more intent on designing his job so that he could comfortably keep it, rather than DO it; he had no Intention in what he did every day, other than to fill time between 8.30am and 5.30 pm five days a week with as little input as possible. and in this university, he had found the ideal environment -- for him. He was not DOING what was required, only what his job description prescribed as the bare minimum. As we say in the acting game, he was not managing the theatre; he was playing AT managing a theatre. In a commercial venue, he would have been sacked on the spot. At this university, however, it was a "small matter" (his superior's word, not mine).

Over here in my space, small matters "matter"(and, yes, I'm being very positional about this!) When people claim they are "just doing their job", I have to ask "And how do you see your job in the light of the gap between what you're offering and what's actually required here? Who, have you decided, will fill that gap?'

The caretaker's superior was not interested in hearing about "my problem". The theatre had been hired "with lighting", and in his Code Book, lighting was being provided. The fact  that I wanted access to more than just an on/off switch to operate it was viewed as an unreasonable expectation on my part. I got all his justifications about overtime and penalty-rates -- his realities -- which I suspect he had not factored into his costings with the tour organisers. But what truly astounded me (silly, wet-behind-the-ears me!) was his bone-headed insistence that everything was working well, and as it should be: I was an unreasonable trouble-maker. (PS. He eventually got off his arse long enough to give me the name and contact number for an "approved" lighting operator to come down from Hobart for the performance -- at my expense).

Bureaucracies mirror the minds of the people who set them up and run them and, at their worst, provide havens for incompetent bovine morons and disillusioned minimalists.

Back in 1989 I was working with kids on a self-esteem awakening programme we called "I'm Special". One afternoon, after a presentation to 200-odd kids at Wanneroo High School, a teacher confided in me quite self-righteously that "From now on, I'm just going to go through the motions. At 3.30, that's it, I knock off." Then I got several minutes of reasons-why she felt totally justified. And her reasons were all very "reasonable", and emotionally very strong. She was hurting! I could have given her sympathy; I could have given her agreement. But I had recently learned a lesson about empathy: I listened in silence, thanked her for sharing her pain, and walked away.

When we, as individuals or in groups, act out of a state of Mind, we are vulnerable and, deep inside, we know it. That's why the urge to tell and justify our story, over and over again, is so strong. And no amount of social agreement will make that nagging go away. We are secretly afraid of being unmasked, exposed, and having to face the reality that, with the deeply entrenched attitudes we've got, everyone is going to lose -- especially our selves.

This dread of "losing" is one of the drives behind a lot of social ganging-up -- for the comfort of like-minded agreement (Oh, you're so right, dear. [Now please tell me I'm alright, too!]) A free-minded person who won't give agreement is set upon by the rest of the group in a version of the Right/Wrong Game that goes "You're wrong, therefore we must be right." But even when the group "wins", everyone knows within his/her secret soul that something is disturbingly wrong. If they're not aware of it yet, they will be -- it's called the Mid-Life Crisis.

[A mid-life crisis happens when the accumulated weight of years of being "right" and ignoring the creeping feelings of the "wrongness" of our rightness, tips us over the balance point. We capsize. Mid-life crises are not confined to individual people; they manifest in partnerships and larger groupings. Un-addressed, they can progress into mena/andropause]

For what it's worth to you, here's my Ruthless Rule of the Right/Wrong Game ---

If you win -- you lose.
If you're right -- you're wrong.

It's a manifestation of the reality of Polar Opposites.
(And don't bother to go to your mind for an "explanation" of this riddle -- you won't get it there. You'll only truly get it in real-life experiences of winning and losing -- awarefully.

I don't know many people who aren't wary of being found at fault, and I don't believe those who claim they don't care. We all live and function in environments of low tolerance to fault and/or telling the absolute truth. Look at all the posturing, the huffing and puffing, and the finger-pointing we've had to endure from politicians over the last couple of months. Half the people are right, and half are wrong, but which is which? If you can stand far enough back from it, it's ludicrously funny watching the clash of very stupid, mean, unimaginative, self-righteous minds trying to sound intelligent by sprouting catch-cries and slogans; each one insulting the intelligence of just about everyone within earshot, trying to be right by proving the others one wrong. It's absurdly infantile behaviour because, outside of Mind, right and wrong do not exist. If you're looking to any party hacks or factional leaders to lead us out of the mess we're in, forget it. They're just as lost and deluded as we fear we are.

The Transformation you and I desperately seek lies in a direction no-one seems prepared to publicly entertain..... Push the "systems" in the direction they're going, hell-bent for failure. Tell the pollies what a good job they're doing -- they'll believe you. They'll always listen to what they want to hear. Let them destroy what they've set up. Let the whole thing blow up in their faces. Out of the rubble and lava of destruction will emerge new life, a new vision, and new way of doing things that will represent a clear break from all that has gone before.

-*-*-*-*-*-

Everyone has stories like mine about falling foul of minimalist, inhibitive bureaucratic mindsets. My point is that, being mind-based, they mirror at a social level characteristics that we all harbour at an individual level. We exhibit similar characteristics towards our selves and/or others in our personal, relationship, family, work and social lives. To cite one simple example -- look at the penchant of social structures to limit and control access to information and wider truths and possibilities (Don't tell me what I don't want to hear!) We all have hidden personal values and traits that we simply will not put up for review (I don't want to talk about that!); we censor ourselves -- with ourselves and with others, sometimes protesting "too much information!". As that university bureaucracy and that disillusioned teacher were with me, so am I with myself and with others, except sometimes. (But that's just me, isn't it? You're not like me -- are you?)

Social structures and behaviour are an extension of ourselves. To transform society, we only need to transform our self.

But we get caught in a vicious downward spiral. Our internal environment is reflected by the social environment we swim in; and the social environment reinforces our internal mood. When we find ourselves in a family or social environment, or a relationship that is failing to nurture us and our needs to connect, communicate, adjust, learn, expand and express our selves, we get tired; we get sick. We get sick and tired of it. But reacting to that by just going through the motions is not nurturing ourself; withdrawing emotionally and Going-Slow is slow suicide on a no-deposit instalment plan.

The problem I see is that social structures become a dropzone for people who have opted to dis-engage themselves. People who've decided to quit on living and, instead, go through the motions of living, will seek out employment and other protection from institutions that tend to tolerate a philosophy of going through the motions. And there seems to be no shortage of those. Under their fluffy protection, we can find plenty of like-minded teat-suckers who regard anyone who comes to work on-purpose as a "sucker".

The spiral doesn't end there, though. Because there's no gut satisfaction in living life down this road, the individuals keep demanding more and more in return for less and less. Every under-challenged, disillusioned piece of flotsam, from members of parliament downwards on the social scale, wants to get paid more for doing less, thinking "Then I'll be happy!".

But that doesn't work either. Finally, the level of productivity and morale gets so low, the institution itself stops working. It has long since ceased to function on purpose. It's purpose has become secondary to the selfish concerns of those who suckle and get fat and lazy from it. Eventually, the structure either implodes, or is exploded by a community that has become so fed-up with it that it is forced to make changes. Unfortunately, "change" isn't enough, and it's not long before the community is saddled with more of the same, just under a different name.

From the vantage point of life's thumb-suckers (and I know this because I spend time in that space), it's actually an achievement to just get by in the face of "unfair" obstacles. Any attempt to transform either them or the system is met with howls of protest. They will not entertain anything that threatens their "hard-won conditions". They see themselves as bullied, oppressed and victimised, even by people who are simply holding them to account for their (in)actions.

From my years as a theatrical and TV producer and events organiser, I know that any idiot can press the big buttons. The success of any endeavour lies in the focus and quality of attention given to details. The Details Principle applies just as much to transformation as it does to organising a major festival -- any overlooked or unfinished business can bring you unstuck and force you to start all over. And Murphy's Law of Enlightenment states that "If it can bring you undone, it will, and at the least convenient time." Enlightenment and transformation are both universally eruptive and exquisitely subtle.

HANDLING CORRECTION

So, social transformation begins with one's self......

For most of my life I've had a problem with being corrected. In the first 17 years of my life, correction equated with punishment -- there were no intermediate stages. It was always loud, painful, abusive and sometimes life-threatening, I have an instant, automatic, visceral terror of being bailed up for screwing up.

But in later adulthood I've luckily been blessed by some good mentors and teachers who understood me well enough to be patient with my slow progress through the defensive wall of horror.

From the day I got free and left home. here's how it used to be for me....... Can you relate to any of this.....?

Whenever I did anything wrong and failed to acknowledge it, I would dramatise it. I'd get tired and depressed (I still do at a serious threat to my equanimity). I'd get too busy, or get a headache. I might get bitchy with someone (still do - inside), and I'd have a long string of  stories, reasons and excuses why things didn't turn out the way they should have........ anything but simply admit that I blew it. Then I'd go on out of rampant defensiveness to make more and bigger mistakes, until I'd finally make one so dramatic that someone had to either haul me over the coals or, in some cases, fire me.

Similarly, social environments and structures are not normally ready to cop to responsibility for mistakes, nor do they encourage it (at least publicly) from the people who work within them.

I had a good boss at Channel Nine in Perth -- an ebullient bloke called Laurie Kiernan.  One day he patiently listened to my long list of reasons-why, justifications, mitigations and excuses for something I'd done. When the torrent finally stopped, he looked at me kindly for a moment, than said quietly, "Mr.Barkla, that's one helluva list of reasons. There's only one thing wrong with it; you ain't on it." I've never forgotten it.

Laurie taught me that when we fail to acknowledge our mistakes and our role of responsibility in them, we're doomed to repeat them, doing harm to ourselves and others. He was taking responsibility with his Board of Directors for having hired me; all he wanted from me was self-responsibility.

Social organisations are not normally conducive to that level of integrity. In hindsight, he was not  the first truly responsible man I'd ever met, but he was the first one I recognised. I guess that said something for my growing maturity. I am indeed fortunate and grateful for having known him.

Instant correction -- calling it straight -- is true support. Social-ites may call it disloyalty, negativity, abruptness, rudeness, and even abusiveness. But then, social consciousness would rather call a spade "A hard, metallic implement for cultivating or burying something...", rather than "a spade".

Correction is an application of the energy of Love. How you choose to experience being on the receiving end of correction says more about you and the breadth of your definition of "love", than the person who's sticking their neck out for you.

Going through the motions, withholding truth and ducking responsibility are debilitating and exhausting. Real work -- working on purpose and taking full responsibility -- is invigorating.

TOWARDS A CONSCIOUS SOCIETY

Individuals becoming personally aware and growing in consciousness are already having a transformative effect on their social milieu. Without proselytising, transforming individuals naturally transform relationships; transforming relationships naturally evolutionise families, organisations and institutions. The manner in which people relate to each other and to the universe they live in is being regrounded.  We may falter, get lost and make mistakes along the way, but the old ways are at last disappearing as the world undergoes radical renewal, from the bottom upwards.

That's the good news...

The bad news is that social structures and environments are still imposing influence from above and within, from mindsets of positionality and right-ness that ultimately do not produce anything more than compliance, conformity and occasional surface change. Revolutionary movements against totalitarianism, for example, have rarely - if ever - produced anything more than a differently flavoured totalitarian regime. Tsar Nicholas was replaced by Joseph Stalin. Chiang Kai Chek was replaced by Mao Tse Dung. The King of Thailand will be replaced by Thaksin Shinawatra, or one of his cronies. The "change" usually means even more rules, more restrictions, more limitations to freedom, more govern-ment. We change leaders, we change governments, but nothing gets appreciably better because neither the leaders nor the institutions through which they function know how to escape Mind. They may offer goals, and promise rewards, but they lack Purpose and Vision beyond their limited imaginings.

My commitment is to a world that works. And it works when my world is working for me and your world is working for you. It works both ways. It cannot be that my world can work for me, and yours can lose out as a result of that. The world does not work that way.

A "world working" doesn't mean quite the same for me as it does for you. We each have a different view of what constitutes workingness, and that is as it should be. We don't have to agree, or to all be the same in order to get along. But we DO need to Allow the differences between us. Neither personal ego nor social consciousness are renowned for their ability to allow for differences.

A synthesis of diverseness is how the world works. It's complex, but maybe I can use a simplified example ...... take the co-existence of lions and impala. Lions don't eat grass. Impala eat grasses; lions eat impala. That's how it works. It could be said that the impala support the lions. But there is more..... the fitter, stronger and smarter impala tend to get away from the lions, who are quite happy to make do with the weaker, sick or older impala, thus culling "weak" strains out of the impala gene pool. That's healthy for the impala. So it can also be said that the lions are supporting the impala. The whole thing balances: it works.

I want to see the world actually DOING what it is designed to do -- nurturing and supporting the experience of all being. I want everyone to get that they are empowered and nurtured. What I want is not "revolutionary" in the normally accepted meaning of the word. Revolution is habitually equated with social change, revolting against something, resisting something. It predicates on something being "right", and something else being "wrong". My kind of revolution transcends conflict. It transcends change; it is not looking for change. Change is the transition from young caterpillar to fatter, smarter and older caterpillar; Transformation is the switch from caterpillar to butterfly. I seek to provoke and empower transformation.

Social change has some value. It is one aspect of evolution, just in ultra-slow-motion. But I'm impatient;  I like quantum surprises. I'm not going to live long enough for "change" to do it for me. Left on its own, change quickly loses impetus by chasing its own tail. Social change produces only incremental improvements. The world at large still doesn't work any better for all but a select few, just a bit differently.

My kind of transformation focuses on creating space for Possibility here and now. The past is for forensics. The future is for soothsayers. The only reality is here and now. Even while you're trawling around the remains of the past, or entrancing your way into a fantasised future you're doing it here and now -- always. There is no other time or place!

Mind-scientists tell us, quite rightly, that the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour. From within a mind perspective, that's very true. But we are much more than mere Mind, and outside of Mind a here-and-now moment of transformation can break that nexus between the past and the future -- forever.

That break can only happen, though, for individuals. Transformation happens socially when enough individuals get the transformative "a-hah!" to tip the balance of critical mass over in favour of the new paradigm. Australian politicians in the last few weeks, in the context of a hung parliament have coined the phrase "a new paradigm". We wish!! It isn't. What's happened is not a new paradigm. The pollies haven't transformed, and nothing much has even changed. There may be some cosmetic tinkering with existing policies and some debating rules, but basically we get the same old people sprouting the same old jingoistic slogans and doing the same old things the same obnoxious ways. If there had been a new paradigm, few - if any - of them would have been re-elected. We'd have an entirely different bunch of newbies in Canberra now experimenting for some new, more effective way to get the national housekeeping done.

A new paradigm is certainly what's needed, but before that can happen there's a lot of personal transforming to be done, and that can only be addressed in the here-and-now.

While I often sound warnings to others about the possible pitfalls of taking a certain direction in life, and recommend healthier alternatives, my responsibilities and rights end right there. I have no idea where you ought to be going or what your goals should be. That is no-one's business but yours. And I decline invitations from others to tell them what to do. On the contrary, my stand in life is one of "self-responsibility", and I create you as able and authorised to make your own choices, and go responsible for the consequences (It's your life; you live it.)

An idea that transformed me, and can transform you, is that it doesn't matter so much to know exactly where you're going, as it is to know where you're now coming from. Starting from where you are is a lot easier if you know where you actually are (as distinct from where you think you are or where you think you ought to be.) What opinions, beliefs and ideas are you carrying in your baggage, and how are you feeling about your present condition. What do you think is wrong with it? What's right with it? What have you learned from it so far? Is that learning going to expand, or contract your possibilities for the next moment? What is your model for survival? What do you agree with, what do you disagree with, what are you OK with, and what are you not OK with? Get your positionality, and know that whatever you resist from here onwards is going to show up in your face.

The first step in transforming where you are going to is to get straight on where you are and make peace with where you are coming from. Then drop every attachment to how you think the next moment ought to turn out.
Know what you want,
Put out for it,
Release it to a creative force (whatever you consider that to be),
Do whatever tilling needs to be done,
Then engage creatively with what you get.

That's how it works. Individually and socially.

(I have tried other ways that do work -- goal-setting, time-managing, positive thinking, praying, affirming, chanting  etc., but found that they don't work for long, because all I got was small change -- no real transformation. I found that, the more things change, the more they stay the same. But I'm sure you're going to find that out for yourself, and that is as it should be. All I ask on your behalf is that you be aware, and when you come to your next experience of "not-working", just remember what you've read today).

SELF AND SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS

Self is not the same as "selfishness"; in fact they are in some respects polar opposites. Self is the level of awareness we have of what we are at the deepest core of being. Self is infinitely allowing, which is more than can be said for "selfishness". Self has nothing whatsoever to do with accidents of lineage, biography, geography, culture, appearance, attitude, health, intelligence quotient, achievements or possessions -- anything that comes and goes. These, and more, are all available to Self for the purpose of human experiences, but they are NOT Self itself.

Self has no opposite. It is the ultimate absolute. There is nothing that is not Self.

Selfishness -- in the negative sense of the word, is what results when we identify with any of the above artifices. Selfishness has opposites, which might sound something like "altruism" or "consideration". Selfishness arises from ego, which hijacked the term "self" unto itself in order to camouflage itself and guilt-trip us away from deeply exploring "Who am I?" When we really question our Am-ness, we eventually get to a point where our ego gets busted from the CEO's chair back to where it belongs -- in the mailroom. Ego, just like its offsprung social consciousness, has a vested interest in sabotaging any effort to access true Self.

Self is that which has created and is aware of and available to all experience. There is nothing narcissistic about creating and transcending the things that lead to narcissism.

We are Self, loaded down with, and limited by all the things we add after "I am......." That includes being social animals. Social is selfish, for as long as the individual Selves that make it up continue to behave so that they can experience the giving and receiving of "selfishness". That will continue until each person-ality realises that he/she is short-changing himself, and gives it up. When enough people give it up, society will stop being selfish and become Itself; it will return to its original purpose.

What do you think were the original reasons our ancient ancestors socialised themselves inside their caves and trees? Make a list.

Now look at each item on that list. How well are each of our present social structures -- family, state and religious -- fulfilling those  purposes?

What, do you think, are the causes of their failures? Make another list.

Now, looking at each item on that list in turn, how do those failures and causes show up in your being?

If you want to change your society, that's where you go to work right now.

MISSING ...... ME

Sometimes when I look inside me
I see negative-photo images of things I think I need --
Missings.
The matching positive images of those things I want appear to be outside of me --
In things, events,  relationships and expectations apparently being enjoyed by others.
Strewn all over the world are bits of me
Invested in things I think I need to have
Leaving identical, reverse-polarity holes inside of me -- "missings".

How did I get them?
I sure didn't start out on life with them,
Then, nothing was missing.
But there came a day when others started telling me in word and attitude
That there were certain "must-haves" that were missing from my makeup,
And I believed it.
They loved me, and I loved them, and needed their support.
I went along, to get along.
And as I grew older, the list grew longer,
As others found more faults
In my blossoming personality,
And got increasingly aggressive about it.

I fell for "missing", hook, line and sinker (puns intended).
"Smarten up"
"You've got to do more"
"You've got to do better"
"You've got to do different".
"You must get this..." (including, at the outset, spirituality and enlightenment).
Each admonition created new holes of "missing" in me.
I quickly got the hang of it and started creating my own miss-givings
And learned how to use them to manipulate others
Just so that I could get my way.

With every "missing" I went looking outside
For something and someone to plug the imagined holes,
And I found plenty more missing out there, too,
And plenty of other people parading their "missings" like sandwich boards.

Now, I have found
The only thing "missing" is me,
And it's way past teatime --
Time to call me home.

Nothing was ever missing,
Except in my imagination.
What I went out looking for
Was always within -- waiting for me to wake up.
I want to BE.....
Me.
I really want to BE me!

Every time another little bit of me comes home
Another hole of "missing" dis-appears.
I become alright,
And for the first time I can truly know
Who am I?

NOW I UNDERSTAND....

[An incident at work today]

He fell on two steps.
I didn't see it, but heard a noise and looked around from my work
He was lying on the floor, face-down in the vivid red and green of a salad he'd been carrying when he tripped.

He was a big man -- well over six feet tall --
Lean and muscular,
With enormous hands, farmer's hands.......
I vividly remember his hands.
They were shaking, still feebly clutching at the air for support.
This was a body that had once lived a life of undoubting certainty,
Now inhabited by man grown old, frail and, for the moment at least, bereft of all dignity;
Shocked, trembling, lost
And paralysed by confusion and embarrassment.

As I helped him up to his feet, I recognised myself
And wept for him and his lost youth.
No.
I wept for both of us.

THE QUIZ EVERYBODY WINS

What is it to be a human being?

There are no wrong answers.

MISSING ........ I AM.......

If only we could get the fullness of "I am"!
And, of course, we cannot --
That's like a glovebox trying to contain the car.

But the closer we get to the full import of "I am",
The more we get that there's nothing missing;
No need for priests, temples, cathedrals, cruci-fixes,
Spiritual-growth hormones, or personal development regimens
Chants, affirmations, diets of positive thinking --
Or any other external plug-ins to make up
For what we think is missing inside of us.

To become "I am" is to allow
That we are a bloody sight better than we think we are, or can be.
To be "I am" is to be in love,
To have love fully.
Then can we give love freely and unconditionally.
We cannot give away what we secretly believe we do not have.
But we sure do radiate whatever crap we DO have --
Dogs, cats and dolphins can pick up on it a mile away!

When we forget "I am" and come from "missing",
"Missing" is what we put out
Under the disguises of compulsive "caring" and "loving deeds"
Hoping and expecting thereby to attract some love from another source,
Maybe even an aloof and elusive "god".
That won't work --ever,
It never did.
We're not "missing" anything.
We're depriving ourselves, no doubt about that --
Famishing ourselves in the middle of a feast.

Here's how it happened --
We had a thought -- "What if my parents don't love me?"
And we invented "missing" to try and manipulate them into doing it.
It wasn't necessary: we were wrong about our parents and their love --
(And still are, by the way).
They loved us, as best they knew how.
WE stopped loving us;
That's where we came unstuck.

Giving and caring from an empty place of "missing"
Yields 'missing".
Your charity resounds like a hollow "clang", echoeless.

When we're "missing", there's no space left for love;
We're full-up -- with "missing".

On those odd occasions when I am totally "being"....
I get "I am";
I have everything,
And I have nothing, the kind of nothing that offers infinite space for me, and others, to Be
Without conditions
In unconditional love.
I get it,
And then I lose it again.....

God said "I am" (and Moses called him that -- ya'-weh;
Jesus Christ said "I am -- and you can be, too!"
He showed us how to do it.
So did Buddha, so did Confucius, and Mohammed, and Papaji, and Osho.........
But we still haven't got it as a permanent way of being, have we?
Well we are that, too.
Got it?
We're reluctant to claim magnificence; we have an investment in remaining helpless.
What might that be, I wonder?
Here are some questions for you --
If I unqualifiedly proclaim "I am",
And become happily self-sufficient,
Who would be overjoyed? Hmmmm?
Make a list.
These are the people who already love you.
And who on this list would be let off the hook of my resentments?
Who, on this list, do I hold something (no matter how small) against?  Hmmmm?
These are the people you're trying to maniupulate
By hurting yourself
And pouting "Look what you're doing to me".
Last question -- How well is this working for you?

But when we do embrace the fullness of what we are,
Whenever we do get that total, ego-less feeling of "I am",
We be-come powerful, self-sufficient,
Open to sharing out of an overflowing abundance,
Giving and receiving out of the fullness
Of all that we are, and all that is.
Complete.
No frayed bits to get trampled,
No emotional hooks cast out there to come back empty
Or get tangled up with someone else's hooks,
No attachments hanging off us to be afraid of losing or getting damaged:
We are -- all of a piece.
What is -- is,
And we are -- what we are.
What is -- we are,
And what we are -- is.
Who are you?
Ya'-weh.
The god you're waiting to meet,
Is waiting to meet you,
Now/here.

RELATIONSHIP

I'm often asked
"What are you looking for in relationship?"
I'll tell you......

Courage and encouragement.
A soft place to fall.
Recognising the perfection of our imperfections --
Something to experience
And be experienced.
To embrace you as You
And for me to be embraced as Me,
Clearly, cleanly and evenly.

How's that?

ACTING, PRETENCE & DECEIT

All pretence is tied to something real
That is scaring the pretender.
It's that reality I look to see.
It's that reality I speak to.

ENLIGHTENMENT

Enlightenment is the light-ness within and without each one of us.
Enlightenment enables us
To see how to see.

It is the light inside of us so that we can see all around in here,
And it is the light around us illuminating all that is.

LIFE AND DEATH

My flabber has just been gasted.
Some cretin in the Vatican has just decreed
That funerals should not be a cause for celebration
But some kind of sombre dedication of the corpse to his church's version of God.
I thought the dinosaurs had all died!
Presumably this turkey would have you believe that, if the corpse (which is all that's left -- hello!!) isn't consigned to God in just the right way by those who remain "alive", the previous occupant of the body ain't gonna make it to Heaven!

The beliefs of ancient Egyptians with their pyramids and Chinese with their funeral rites are alive and well and festering in downtown Rome!

Think about it.
It's now the responsibility of my children and grandchildren
To toe a religious line,
Or I won't make it to the pearly gates??
The concept of original sin is dead --
I now declare man free.

I'm thinking of changing my will.
Please have an Imam chant his mumbo-jumbo over my just-morted remains --
I'd rather chance spending eternity honing my rusty romantic skills on a harem of vestal virgins,
Than what the tykes have got in mind for me.
In addition, please make sure it's one helluva knees-up!
80% of those who bother to turn up
Will have some reason to celebrate that I lived,
And the rest will want to celebrate that I'm gone.
Party time!
What happens between me and god eslewhere,
Is nobody's else's business.

===============

Seriously,
The Life-in-death,
And the Death-in-life
Are gateways
To possibilities.

If you are really living
(As distinct from serve-viving out an existence)
Death is no problem.
Death is nothing, but a mirror-cle of life;.
Death IS life - turned inside-out.
In order to fear death,
You have also to be afraid of life.
When you embrace life to the fullest
You embrace its other face -- death.

Death has become darkly entrenched in our culture
Through ignorance, superstition and manipulation.
Death, in all its forms, has been actively touted.
As the worst of all possible outcomes.
Which is a bit ironic, because we all experience some form or other of dying every day.... little griefs, disappointments, betrayals, embarrassments, guilts....
And we're still alive to tell the tale.
Spiritual power-mongers have always known that
1) We all know what it feels like for something inside us to die; and
2) If they can scare us sufficiently with the threat of an ETERNAL "death", then they've got us under control in life.

For what it's worth, here's my suggestion...
Embrace life and death to its fullest,
Moment by moment,
Day by day,
Breath by breath......
Breathing in -- living; breathing out -- dying.
Dying and Living are two aspects of the same thing:
We call it "living", but it's shorthand for both living and dying.
Dying is a consequence of living;
Living onward into forever is a consequence of dying --
Dying to the old and outworn in every moment,
Lets us go into Life.

Even as we are living, we are reaching a zenith
Where we  surrender to dying.
As we hurtle into dying, we are gathering impetus
To soar once more into Life.
It's like a rollercoaster ride.
You can either jump aboard and enjoy it,
Or lay down on the tracks in front of it.
Your choice.

TRUST

Trust is not an act of passive submission.
Trust is a way of being,
Creatively engaging-with what-is.
Trust is an open challenge
To every illusion of safety.

SO NEAR AND YET................

I have long wondered

At the thinness of whatever membrane may exist between "good" and "evil";
Maybe there's nothing between tham at all.

Look at literature.......

Obi-Wan Kenobi's most brilliant and powerful Jedi was Darth Vader;
Jesus' closest and most intelligent disciple was Judas;
God's nearest and loveliest angel was Lucifer (which, by the way, means "light").
They got so close,
Then miss-stepped.

What happened? What intervened?

These  questions I stand in -- for me;
You might like to stand in them too, for yourself --
And remember there can be no wrong answers.

All the great disciples get close,
But no cigar.
Religion gets close.
The "ologies" (pun intended) get so close!......
And they all miss by a country mile
And fall into the deepest of endarkenments.

To say that this journey of evolving and transforming
Is challenging and self-confronting
Would be the understatement of all time,
And I'm beginning to discover that it doesn't get any less so
The nearer I get to the ultimate "got-it".
No wonder so few people take the road less travelled
Onward into forever.

If you're committed to come with us,
Pack plenty of Integrity, Self-honesty, Courage, Trust, Self-reliance, Enthusiasm and Humility;
Any you don't need for yourself,
You can share with your fellow adventurers.

THE TRUTH

I write to you about truths.
While you still hear from me,
You can be sure
I do not yet know The Truth.
When I know The Truth
You may not hear from me --
I will probably have fallen silent.

THE ULTIMATE RESPONSE-ABILITY

What is -- is.
What isn't -- isn't.
Nothing is good or bad,
Until limited mind makes it so.

What happens -- happens.
What doesn't happen -- doesn't happen.
In either case it doesn't mean anything,
Until limited mind makes it so.

Consequences are just that -- consequences,
Not reward or punishment.
There is no judgement day
Other than the one going on inside your head today.

Anything we add after "I am......."
Is our own, personal business.
Anything we add after "You are......"
Is still our own, personal business.
Mind your own business.

What I feel about all of that is a matter of personal choosing;
What I do about it is a matter of personal deciding.

My life is up to me,
First and last.
Your life is up to you.
It you want to compare notes,
That's fine with me.
But if you want me, or anyone else to go in any way responsible for you or your experience,
You've just thrown away the most precious gift of all --
Your freedom.
If you want to, or feel obliged to shoulder responsibility for someone else,
You've just committed the one and only crime --
Theft.
Of responsibility and freedom.

BREATHING

Stop what you're doing for just a moment.......
Bring your attention to your breathing.
When you're ready..........
Breathe IN .......... That's called "being born anew".
Breathe OUT ........... That's called "dying".
Breathe IN ........ Take in the new
Breathe OUT ...... Let go the old.

Being alive involves being born and dying
In a single, continuous ongoing.........
When we put a "hold" on our breath
We've stopped to deal with what's stopping us.
Let go
And get on with it.

If you want to live,
Keep breathing
In AND out.
Give an unqualified "Yes"
To both.

ESCAPE HATCH

Anything that diminishes your aliveness is an illusion.

That includes all your attempts to get life to "work".
Life works,
If only you'd let it!
It takes effort to stuff it up;
Get out of your own way.
Your life and mine ARE working.
They might not be working the way we expect,
But working, they are.
Maybe it's our expectations that need examining.

Victims insist that their expectations are right,
And life is at fault.
They blame circumstances and otherness
For the experiences they create.
Unless circumstances change and "others" get help,
Victims are buggered.

Victimness is a dead-end highway
Clogged with creation's only traffic-jam.

Have you had enough of getting stucker and stucker?
Do you want out?
Good.
This is life working!

ESCAPE HATCH  # .1.

I AM
THE SOLE/SOUL CREATOR
OF MY EXPERIENCE.

When you're ready,
Stand in that for 21 days,
And view your everyday life events and feelings
From that space.

MIRROR-CLES

Mirror:   Mirari  [Latin]  --  "To wonder at....."

Miracle:  Mirus   [Latin]  --  "Wonderful"

We are each a mirror reflection of God --
Maybe that's one reason why
Everything is the reverse-opposite of the way we see it.

When this mirror gets that
Everything and eveyone else is a wonder-full  reflection,
"Mirror-cles" start to happen.

The world is pregnant with miracles.
All it takes is for us to approach with quiet and awe
And the most mundane things open themselves into infinities.
Ivan M. Granger

RESISTANCE

We attract what we don't want.
Where lies what we DO want.

ENJOY YOUR TRIP

When walking these days
I spend a lot more time looking at the ground,
Making sure I don't trip over.
Consequently, I see less of the sky......

Until I trip over.

I have found.....
There are a lot of things I didn't see
Until I fell.

If you're down,
Look around and take a moment
To see how things look
From that perspective.

THE SUPPORT OF FRIENDS

If you want to play with me,
It might help if one of us defines what "friendship" means
So that we can both see if we're on the same page.

If you want support from me,
Perhaps we should get clear on how I define "support"......
You might not like the Barkla model.

A lot of people confuse "support" with "agreement",
And unconsciously define a "friend"
As "someone who'll give agreement to your pretences and stuff, as long as you give agreement to theirs".

I'm not that kind of friend.

Don't worry; if that's what you're looking for
You'll find plenty who do fit that bill.

I have a low tolerance for game-playing, pretence and deceit,
And I expect my friends not to tolerate it from me either.

I'm more of a Companion and Coach.
When you're sad, I'll ask you how long you want to wallow in it;
Then when the bell rings, I'll goose your sorry arse
And get you laughing.
When you're angry, I'll make fun of your anger, but not you.
When you're happy, I'm happy.
When you're hurting,
I'll be the first one through the door
To throw my arms around you and tell you --
"Someone's gotta change this!"
And, providing you're fair dinkum about moving on,
I'll be there for you until you're through.

Support and agreement are not always one and the same.
Someone who wants something from you will always give you agreement.
But if you're about to do something stupid,
Another perspective and a Zen-like rap over the knuckles can be the best support you'll ever get.
And if you're being really stupid,
And if I really care,
I may give you a bit of a hard time.
(Just thought I'd warn you).

If you'd rather stay a Victim,
We can shake hands
And say "Goodbye" now.
No hard feelings.....

If you want the sort of friendship
That treats you as intelligent and able,
And not as a dimwit who needs "saving"
I'm your man.

HAPPINESS (CONTEXT)

A bit like fish are born into water,
We were born into a soup of pre-existing Contextual Conditions
(eg.  just within the labour suite there may be "joyfulness" and "fearfulness", to name but two).
Contexts and Conditions are both states of being
(eg. happiness, sadness. jealousness, joyfulness)
And we were coincidentally born into a specific mixture of them;
We didn't have any choice about that.
We were wrapped in them, like some swaddling cloak of virtual reality
And we began, from the very first moment of consciousness,
To engage with the world
From behind the perceptual filtering
Of whatever conditions we showed up in.
As we grew up, we succumbed to, and unthinkingly adopted more prevailing conditions
That fitted through the swaddling filtering we already had "protecting" us,
Adding daily to the complexity of, and reinforcing our prevailing  emotional and mental states.
Our view of the world and our ability to be flexible in our response to it,
Have steadily been stultified
By operating programmes we're barely aware of.

This is part of what it means to be human.

Conditions and Contexts are quality-states of being, perceiving, feeling and thinking
In which we hold, observe, and respond to the events of our lives.
The Conditions and Contexts that we live in
Colour the way we receive and respond to existence;
For example, when I am in a Context of "happiness",
I will see and act very differently from times when I am in a Condition of, say, "fearfulness".

You may have noticed that I have been using two words to describe the same thing here --
"Context" and "Condition'.
What is the difference between them?
For the purposes of this exploration,
A Condition is a state of existing that we don't think about --
We just adopted it as a default way of being
And it thinks us.
A Context is a way of being that we consciously choose,
Usually so that we can experience our life in a particular way.
Conditions and Contexts can be positive or negative, creative or destructive, expansive or limiting,
And they will both allow those and all other polarities to exist within and around their space.
For example -- "Happiness" as either Context or Condition,
Recognises that "Un-happiness" and "Happiness" go together --
They're two sides of the one coin;
[Happiness] as a context allows space for its opposites to co-exist.
When Happiness will not comfortably allow Unhappiness to be,
It has ceased to be a Context or Condition, and has become a Position
Which is something else entirely different.
Positions live trapped inside the box called Ego:
Conditions and Contexts  contain and cradle the box called Ego.

When we're not creating or choosing a Context for our selves and the group we're with,
We are at the mercy of our default Conditions.
Conditions more often tend to be negative, limiting and destructive.
Consciously created Contexts can be anything you want them to be;
It depends on what kind of experience you decide that you want.

When we baulk at a pattern of experiences we're having,
Our first reaction is usually to try and change the circumstances
That we think are "causing" the experience.
The mid-to-long-term success rate of that strategy has never been good,
And never will be.
Why?
Firstly because the jury is still out on whether circumstances are the cause or the effect of a Context or Condition;
And secondly -- and more importantly --
Because the Context or Condition we come from
Determines how we will experience the circumstances,
No matter what they are.
A person in a context of "happiness", and another in a condition of "unhappiness"
Will see the same circumstances differently -- always.
Ergo --
If you want to change your experience,
You have only to change your Context or Condition.
That is the best news you're going to get today
Because it means that, for you to get happy
The rest of the world and its dog doesn't have to get therapy!
Your experience is up to you. Period.

Contexts are not found,
They are created,
Deliberately and consciously.

Choose a Context. Any context (eg "satisfaction").
We are never going to get to [Satisfaction] (which is why we so often settle for Gratification).
We don't get to experience Satisfaction unless and until we create, and come from Satisfaction.
Dissatisfaction has not, and never will be, a good breeding ground for Satisfaction.

There is no way TO [Happiness/Satisfaction/Honestness....]
[Happiness etc.} IS the way.

Abraham Lincoln said --

"Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."

Thanks Abe. I couldn't have said it better.

PERFECTION

What is perfection?
It strikes me that the striving for Perfection
Is a striving for the Lost Womb.

Well, we left mother's womb
Because we ran out of space in there.
We got too big for it,
And had developed sufficiently to discard the primal support systems
For something more sophisticated and challenging.
It was time to move on
Into a bigger womb.

When I get that I'm just as safe in this womb
As I was in the last one.
Then I get that all is perfect, just as it is.

Perfection is ---

Doing and fully experiencing
What we're doing and experiencing
While we're doing and experiencing it.

A Worrier mows the lawn, thinking about having to do it again.
A Guilt-tripper mows the lawn, beating himself up about the way he did it last time.
A Control freak mows the lawn, churned up about how messily the grass has been growing.
A religious man mows the lawn, thinking about God.
A conscious man mows the lawn, experiencing mowing the lawn.

That is Perfection.

MUM & DAD

Be honest now....

Dead or alive,
Who gets to be the bigger winner if you show up happy and successful?
Mum or Dad?

Who gets ticked off if you lose?
Mum or Dad?
Why can't you let him/her win?
Are your resentments worth more than your happiness and freedom?
Are they worth losing whatever they're eating away inside you?
That's what your resentments are costing you,
Regardless of how justified they might be.

Is it worth it?

If your answer is "Yes",
That's fine ;
At least you're now aware
Of the price you're paying.

MISSING SOMETHING?

What is missing in your life?
Is it available elsewhere?
Could there be a valid reason why you don't have it, when others appear to?
If you had it, what quality would it bring to your life that you can't get any other way?

OK. Let's start to tease this out a bit and see what shows up......

What else, do you think, might be a factor in you not having it?
What is it about you that you believe is stopping you?

Let's look at motives.........

Do you really want it, or do you prefer to hang around wanting it, or have you just gotten used to the habit of wanting what you don't have?
What are you afraid might happen if you don't get what's missing?
What might be a complication or responsibility that might happen if you DO get what you want?

OK. Now let's look at how we all attract or distract what we want.......

Let's step back and look away from you for a moment, and think of someone else you know who really wants something they haven't got. Have you got someone in mind? Good. Here's my question -- What - in their demeanour -  do you think, may be stopping them from attracting what they want? What is it about their Wanting that is understandable, but off-putting?

Now let's come back to you.......

You might not have what's missing, but you DO have the Wanting of it. Who is supposed to sit up and take notice that you haven't got what you want?
What might be some payoffs for prolonging the wanting of something?
Are you willing to live in the possibility that what's missing here is not for you?

Now we're going to dig deep.......

There are a number of beliefs and opinions you've gathered around this condition to help support you in getting what you want. What is one reason you feel justified in wanting what you don't presently have?
What is another justifying reason?
There's something else you feel right about here; what is it?
What is the main position you're on -- the one you feel closest to?
What is the Opposite of that position?
Who is occupying and reflecting that opposite position for you?
Think of another time and another situation when you held that opposition. When was that?
What's a position you're afraid you'll drop into if you don't get what's missing now?

Complete these sentences now, with as many endings as you can......

If I get what I want, one desirable quality that will come with it is .............

I can also experience that quality by ..........................

If I don't get what I want, one valuable lesson I will learn is...........

One thing I'm grateful for in this situation is........

I am beginning to see .......................

Now take your hands off the controls, and let life deliver.

UNIVERSAL SEX

The whole of Existence-creating has a sex-like quality --

Giving/Receiving,
Sowing/Bringing forth,
Ideas/Visions
Thoughts/Feelings,
Feeling/Actions
Male/Female....

All at one and the same time.

The whole of creation is pure SEX.
We've simply taken one aspect
Of the universal creative interaction,
And called that "sex".

Which prompts a question --
Why would anyone choose to promote guilt
(If it feels good -- don't!)
Around a universal process that got you here,
And that you're part-icipating in right now,
No matter how guilty you feel about it?

I'm a product of that guilt philosophy,
And it took me a very long time to get over it.
My parents, like many of their generation,
Had sex only to produce a planned-for child.
But my father, at least, must have got a bit excited about it,
Otherwise I wouldn't be here.
I was brought up in a condition
Where some inescapable things may be incurably pleasurable,
(A pseudonym for "Sinful"),
So woe betide you if you enjoy them!
If it feels good, it ain't Godly!
Who in hell made that one up?
And what else did they screw around with
While they had everyone's attention?

No wonder so many of us stumbled into adulthood with problems around
Giving and receiving,
Sowing and reaping,
Thinking originally and feeling authentically,
And acting creatively.

Let's hear it for the joyous knees-up
That is Existence!

REFLECTIONS

Where am I?

Here

Where are you?

There.
Where do I know about you?

Here in me.

Where do you know about me?

There in you.

Where do I know about God?

Here in me.

Where do you know about God?

There in you.
Then you know me in you,
And I know about you in me.
Then you are in me,
And I am in you.
And God is in you,
And God is in me.
We are both made of the same stuff.
So where is the difference?

Ego is like one wave of the ocean saying to another wave of the same ocean
"I am going to be bigger, better, stronger, faster and smarter than you."
Then comes the shoreline.
All the waves dissolve;
And the ocean remains.

Some observations about waves --
  • All waves are of the same stuff
  • All waves are connected by the stuff they're made of
  • All waves are temporary. The ocean remains
  • All waves exist only with the support of the ocean, and all the other waves.
  • All waves arise from, and exhibit turbulence and perturbation. The ocean doesn't mind.
How does your ego feel about all that?

MASTER CLASS: QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS -- An Explorere's Points to Ponder

  • There are answers, and there is no "THE Answer". And that isn't true either. But The Answer would probably look like blank space and sound like silence, except there'd be no-one there to see or hear it. So, while there may be "The Answer", you and I are never going to know it. It is only the arrogance of Ego that claims to know "The Answer".
  • The world is uncomfortable about sitting in questions -- it wants Answers. But Answers only pose more Questions. Perhaps creation is trying to tell us something.
  • Every Answer is an answer to an infinite number of Questions ... eg. If the answer is 3, the question might be 1+1+1 =.....; or 8-5 =.....; or "How many wise men trekked to Bethlehem?"; ...... you get what I mean. Now think of some questions to which "Me" is your answer. If you stick with this exercise for long enough you will discover that you are the answer to an infinite array of questions. And none of the questions are wrong! And every one of those questions is your question, and so is the answer --"Me". They are yours. Own them
  • You, and your present experience, are the Answer to questions you may have forgotten you once asked. Stand in this possibility -- This experience I'm having is the Answer: what might the question have been?" Note everything that occurs to you: accept everything, no matter how absurd it may seem.
  • Some questions to a present Answer may have been asked 30 seconds ago, or 30 years ago. The Universe notes every question you ask, and delivers answers when you're ready for them. It's up to each of us to remember what the questions were. The good news is, we cannot get it wrong.
  • Consider this possibility -- we have been hooked into assuming that questions come first, followed by answers. What if the reverse is also true? What if Answers came first, and Questions arise from a pre-exisitng Answer. What if every event, thought, utterance, feeling, idea and experience you have is the answer to an un-uttered question? Guess what that question might be? Whatever it is, you'll always be right, because you already know the answer.
  • This is an answer: what was the question? Track backwards from the answer to possible questions. The more questions an Answer leads back to, the more useful is the Answer. The fewer questions an Answer leads to, the more important are the Questions. When a bunch of Answers leads back to only one question, you've hit the jackpot... (eg. My Answers one day were  "confusion", "a chest pain", "equanimity" and "deeply caring". The Question to all of them turned out to be "Who am I?")
  • Here's a meditation -- create a Context -- eg. "Yes-ness" (but make up one for yourself that is relevant to you now). Now walk backwards from your context towards possible questions that it answers. Notice carefully the questions you find yourself afraid to ask.
Here's another meditation --  Assume each of these answers, and find  questions for yourself that are answered by each one.........
  • In my middle
  • In the middle of sex
  • In the middle of relationship
  • In the middle of abundance
  • In the middle of scarcity
  • In the middle of knowing
  • In the middle of uncertainty
  • In the middle of feeling
  • In the middle of freedom
  • In the middle of restriction
  • In the middle of experience
  • In the middle of all that is
Note any questions that come up more than once, as the source of more than one of the above answers.

When we let go of the false assumption that all questions come before all answers, and get that an Answer can pre-exist all questions about it (ie. Answer first; questions later), the riddle of Creation suddenly becomes clear. God had a thought, and the thought was a question (Who am I?") Then came the Big Bang. But, and this is my point, God - the Answer - preceded the Question (Who am I?) And, by the way, the Answer to that question has never changed.
0-0-0-0-0-0-0
We all have a box called Mind.
Most of us crawl inside that box and live there,
But it's not compulsory;
We can choose to live outside the box,
In a quality of being we'll call "Context".

Questions that come from inside the box
Come from the stuff of the mind,
And are limited by the size and content of the mind and its stuff.
Available answers will be, likewise, severely limited.
Questions that arise outside the box,
From Context,
Are potentially infinite,
Being shaped only by the nature of the Context.
Available answers will likewise be expansive.

Whenever a question arises,
Look first at where it's coming from --
From Ego/Mind,
Or from Conscious Awareness.
Questions from the mind
Shrink and shrivel truth into "knowledge".
Questions from Context
Expand and enrich experience into "knowing".
Questions from Mind
Have answers which solidify into "the truth" and limit experience;
Questions from Context
Produce answers which dissolve boundaries and expand possibilities.

There is no room for God in any box,
For God is Love
And Love is Free.

PLAYING IT SAFE

There's not much joy in playing "safe".
You have to venture outside if you want to make progress.

Protecting your soul
Is committing it to prison;
Locking it away where no-one can get at it,
Prevents you from seeing and being your self.
And all to no avail --
Who-you-are is indestructible.

EVIL

Evil is "live" in reverse.

Evil is the shadow of darkness.
Anything that blocks out the light,
Anything that supports limitation and ignorance,
And keeps you in the dark
Is "evil".

PAIN & SUFFERING

You want to be compensated for "pain and suffering"?
(Look at what those bad bastards did to me!!)
What are you telling yourself
That enables you to justify somebody else paying for your suffering?
Do you think you're entitled to live your life without suffering?
Who told you that?

Do you want to be saved from your discomforts?
Come on, be honest, at least with yourself.
Now,
What are you telling yourself about pain and discomfort?
Who told you that?
And who have you appointed to do the job of saving you?
Oh, yes; you have appointed somebody to notice your suffering
And feel bad about it.
(And even if that person has died, you don't let up.)

Have you discussed the responsibility for saving you with them?
Have they agreed to take you on?
If they have, you're in deep do-do's.
Even Jesus Christ said "Heal yourselves!"

Look around you,
Nobody gets a free lunch.
Grow up.

Pain and suffering are the price of growing
And the stuff of Wisdom --
For everybody.
Who told you you're somehow "a special exemption"?
There is no "savings plan" for suffering:
You don't need "saving" --

If you want to be "safe" from suffering,
The trick is not to suffer over your suffering.
Got it?

RELATIONSHIP

It doesn't matter how much you love someone:
Who are you when you're with them?

TRUTH

The real truth about ourselves
Often comes from the unlikeliest of sources.

A message about ourself
Is not augmented or diminished
By the supposed qualifications of the messenger.
Truth is truth, however it is delivered.

GROWTH

Our potential for growth is proportional
To the amount of truth we can take about ourself
Without running for cover.

RESPONSIBILITY & FREEDOM

Responsibility and Freedom are inseparable.
Anything that appears to relieve us of our responsibility
Takes away our freedom;
Had you not noticed?
Look at it.....

We can choose whether to live in a context of Freedom,
Or a condition of Slavery:
That's just a matter of how we see it,
And we each have Responsibility in the matter.

You can choose whether or not to willingly accept personal responsibility,
You may try to delegate it to others,
But whichever way, Responsibility remains yours,
And will sheet itself home to you, sooner or later.

Without responsibility, there can be no freedom.
That is a terrible price to pay
For trying to dodge the inescapable.

BECOMING GOD -- AGAIN

A newborn baby simply ..... is.
And that right there is a full-time occupation.
The babe does not bother to think it is
Or speculate on what it means to be;
It simply is,
God-like.
No wonder we gaze into a baby's eyes
And see potential unlimited.

The instant God contemplates its Is-ness,
It lowers its frequency from pure thought into electrums of light and matter
And no-thing becomes some-thing.

I began life as no-thing,
Then worked really hard to become some-thing,
And now find myself being drawn back toward no-thing.
Fewer thoughts,
Less thinking,
Less matter-ing,
Discovering the blissful Ah-ness of "Is-ness",
Empty-full.

Like a red rose absorbs all the colours of the spectrum except red
And reflects that redness back to us,
So we as human beings absorb what we will,
And reflect back onto others what we choose not to absorb.

And we see the reflections off others and the world around us
Through coloured spectacles of our own making,
Seeing them in shapes and hues that are selectively ours.
We do not see what-is;
We see only fuzzy deflections, further filtered by the way we choose to see them,
Not as they fully are.

Our godness absorbs everything
And reflects nothing;
It discards the coloured spectacles
And sees nothing;
For god is
No-thing.

In our ego/humanity
We carry glasses and mirrors for protection,
To see and be seen,
Because we are afraid
To be no-thing.
But that is what we came from,
What we are at our deepest core,
And to what we will return.
What is there to fear?

While we remain human
And subject to fear,
The antidote to being frightened
Is Trust.
Try letting What-Is become preferable to what-isn't,
And becoming as transparent to that as you can.

Without resistance,
Things don't hurt any more.

LIVING THE MYSTERY

You can make your life a question to be answered
And/or a problem to be solved.
I wish you luck;
I tried both, without success.
What is working for me?
Life as a mystery to be lived.

The mind of Man is capable of understanding
Only that which lies below himself on the evolutionary scale.
Well, you may say, since Man is at the top of that tree,
He's capable of understanding everything.
Hmmmm.........
"What if," I ask, "the Evolutionary Scale (man-made, by the way)
Is upside down? Or missing bits Man doesn't know about,
Especially in levels "higher" than himself?
What it there are higher forms of life that, right now,
Are having a good laugh at the arrogance and stupidity
That automatically puts Man himself at the top of a man-devised tree"

I'm reminded of the map or globe of the Earth.
Very familiar.
It was created over time by a bunch of people from the northern hemisphere,
That puts them at the "top",
And antipodean outposts like Australia at the "bottom".
It's an assumption that works OK,
Until you jump out into space,
Where it becomes totally insignificant and, frankly, irrelevant.
I feel similarly about the "evolutionary scale".
I think we're appallingly insular, ignorant and closed-minded
About the universe and our place in it.
I think we're so far up ourselves,
The view is very limited, to say the least.
For example, we go looking "out there" for intelligent life
With a very limited conception of what "intelligent life" might look like.
We assume if its doesn't look at least vaguely human, it can't be clever.
We can't even begin yet to fathom the mysterious intelligence
Of elephants, dolphins, whales or fruit flies,
But we blithely assume that we're somehow better than they are!!
Better at what?
If we can't get a better sense of perspective so close to home,
How on earth can we define or recognise "life"
In the infinite reaches of the cosmos?

We don't know. That's it. ......Period.
And we'll never know anything until we get
That we don't know anything much.

In order to rise above the dogs' breakfast of what we think we know
Into some real Knowing,
We need the courage to live life
With a total YES,
Without asking "Why?".

Behind every one of our beliefs
Lie Doubts.
Behind faith
Lie Suspicions.
Behind every answer
Lie more Questions.
Behind our certainty,
Lies Ignorance
Behind the mystery of What-Is
Lies Wisdom
Accessed through fully experienced experience.
Wisdom, not as a static state,
But as an ongoing process of becoming.

Trust.
Through your doubts, suspicions, questions and false certainties,
Through the Mystery,
Lies True Knowing
Which arises from giving a deep "So be it"
To the paradoxes, contradictions and uncertainties of mystery.

In Mystery is the beginning of Mastery.

SEEKING AND FINDING

It has been said --
"Seek and ye shall find."
Very true,
And not the whole truth.

It is also true that
"Seek and ye shall get the experience of seeking;
Find and ye shall get the experience of finding."

Sometimes, our seeking gets in the way of actually finding.

Here's another truth --

What you're looking for is right in front of your nose."

Questioners often keep swatting answers aside
Because they don't look like what they're looking for.
They never ask "What has this to do with what I'm looking for?"
Coming from an assumption that there is a connection.

And there is..... always,
Otherwise what you see in front of you
Would not be there.

When seeking has not satisfied,
How do we Find?

Ask a question,
And open all your senses,
Not for The Answer,
But for all answers.
Reject nothing,
No matter how contradictory some experiences may seem.

Logic and Reason say "It is either this OR that."
The whole of life says "It is both this AND that",
Including the valid existence of both Logic and Intuition.

Seek, in order TO find
The "more" that always lies just beyond the horizon
Of what you think you know just now.

I say to you --
You already know a lot more than you think you do,
And the rest is available to you.
All you have to do is ask
And stand committed to the question.

REPUTATION & SELF

Reputation is the estimation in which a person or thing is held.

Here's a proposition to stand in.......

The only reasons why your reputation with others would matter
Is because
a) You need something from them that you won't give to yourself; and
b) Your own reputation with yourself needs repair.

What else is there
But Self
Expressing and experiencing itself?

Nothing else.

ENLIGHTENMENT

When I was a child
I used to be afraid of the dark....
Monsters lurked in the dark.
I realise now, of course, they were all in my misused imagination,
As they are for all of us,
No matter how old we get in years.
My monsters weren't real.

Now, I know that you are different --
Your monsters are real.
I mean that sincerely -- they are real -- to you.
No matter how real your monsters are, however,
They don't exist anywhere else but in your mind.
That's why only you can see them as you do.

Even when power-mongers like politicians and bishops
Successfully create monsters they can get some agreement on --
Like "terrorism", "boat people", "judgement day", "satan", "weapons of mass destruction",
And anyone who isn't one of "us" --
Our individual experience of an agreed "monster"
Is uniquely different.
And if you were sitting in front of me right now,
I could prove that to you, in your experience, inside 30 seconds.
In any audience of 5,000 people,
There are 5,000 uniquely different experiences happening
Of the same event.

A monster is an Idea
That needs darkness to survive.
Politicians and bishops are successful
To the degree with which they are able
To manipulate the truth
And keep us in the dark.
Haven't you noticed how manically secretive they are
About all of what they actually do, and how they do it?
They're desperate to control the form and amount of inform-ation we can get our hands on.

That's why I'm such a big fan of Awareness,
And of enlightening
Myself and my world.
An enlightened person is a "loose canon";
He cannot be controlled.

In the light,
Monsters just ........... evaporate,
And their master-minds are out of a job.

LONELINESS

Loneliness and Aloneness are not the same;
I'm often aware of Alone-ness ,
But that's a state of being,
Rather than a particular feeling.
I'm currently standing in the possibility that....

We are, first and last, alone:
Everything else is just distraction.

Aloneness is a state of being I'm quite happy with.
Loneliness is something else.

I wrote what follows on New Year's Day, 1990 --
The last time I recall feeling "lonely".
Maybe there's something I got then that dis-appeared it ......

Behind the tear-filled eyes of Loneliness
 I feel a blaze of light;
Man in his inwardness --
The image of God, the fullness of Good
That can't get out
And find its Otherness.

That was before I went to live the life of a hermit for 8 months in the karri forests of the continent's southwest,
Where I sometimes felt afraid,
But never felt lonely.
It was there, away from the distractions of relationship,
That I discovered the richness and fullness
Of the "otherness" that has always surrounded and supported me.

Aloneness is a partial truth,
Arising from a misspelling,
And a misconception of "All-one-ness".
Loneliness, I've concluded, is a feeling we get
When we shut down
And lose touch
With all that we are.

PURPOSE

Is there a Purpose to all of this?

Yes...... and No.

The only purpose of the Mind
Is to keep itself and its contents intact,
To survive itself and all of its programmes and attachments,
And be right about them.
To keep itself,
Your mind will even kill you, if necessary (eg. cancer)

The only purpose of Being
Is to become more than it knows itself to be right now,
And complete itself.

Beyond that --

No.....

There is no purpose to any of this.

But there is the sheer entertainment of making one or more purposes up for yourself
And learning whatever they teach you.

And aren't you already doing that?

THE BULWARKS OF SOCIETY

How does society protect itself from threats of annoyance and injury,
Emanating from without or within?...............

  • COMPULSION
  • PURPOSE & CONTROL
  • GUILT
That's it.
That's how we sell out and suck up --
Go along to get along.

I didn't say it was wrong,
And I don't say it's right either......

Symptoms of the Presence of Social Compulsion:

A false feeling Security
Shame and guilt, both as  concepts and as feelings.
Authority figures
A Duty consciousness
Words like "should", "must" and "ought" popping up in conversation.
An absence of natural joy and spontaneity,
A feeling of enslavement -- loss of natural freedom
Feeling unloved
Pretending and deceit.
A feeling of separation

Symptoms of Socially Sanctioned Purpose and Control:

A false feeling of Security .
A pervading Dread. There always seems to be someone or something that we're encouraged to be afraid of, along with something to buy, or someone to vote for, to fix it for us.
A longing for a Saviour (anyone from Julia Gillard to Jenny Craig)
A consciousness of Scarcity and Lack.
A belief that there's something to gain, and in "winning" and "earning" as the only legitimate ways to live a fulfilled life.
Anything that makes it socially acceptable to remain a victim for longer than 5 minutes.
A marked absence of natural spontaneity and joy
Ulterior motives.
Dependent relationships.
Power games of domination, manipulation and control.
Emotional, financial and social  enslavement.
All forms of bullying, especially legally sanctioned overlording (including everything from the treatment of asylum seekers, to the male mating ritual posturings of  parliamentary question time).
Pretence and deceit (glorified in political spin).
Emotional hooking.
Addiction (to anything)
Political correctness
Polite niceness (as distinct from open Kindness)
Soul-less propriety and correctness.
Over-regulation  and govern-ment.
Any niceties. regulations and "rights" that encourage people to avoid
self-responsibility for their choices, decisions and actions
Social supports based on acceptable criteria of "un-ableness".

Symptoms of Socially Sanctioned Guilt:

A false feeling of Security.
A fundamental assumption of intrinsic un-worthiness (original sin), and the necessity to a) avoid damnation; and b) earn salvation.
The adversarial court system (Innocence is NOT the opposite of guilt)
All religion (as distinct from spirituality). Some are worse than others. In the main, the more powerful the church hierarchy, the greater use of guilt to keep the common laity under control).
An absence of natural joy and spontaneity.
Shame.
Hypocrisy.
Public floggings (eg. so-called "current affairs" programmes)
Myths about "heaven", "hell", "purgatory", "Armageddon", and "the Judgment Day".
A pandemic famine of empathy and feeling-for.
An epidemic of depressive feelings of separation, fear, and ostracism.
Moral and ethical dictates.
Appeals to "conscience" -- an appalling misnomer in the context of Guilt. There's no such thing as a "guilty conscience"! There is a feeling of "guilty un-conscience".

As I said earlier -- these things are what they are: neither right nor wrong.
But they ought to be seen for what they are,
And that is up to me in my life,
And you in yours.
If you want freedom,
Think for yourself.
(Kings and bishops hate that!)

GETTING OUT OF HOUDINI'S BOX

In mind
We find ourself locked in Houdini's box,
With the key left on the outside.

Inside this chained and padlocked Mind-Box
We occupy points-of-view that we have to justify, pump up and be right about --
Ideas, beliefs, concepts, principles and values --
All the positional things we'd sacrifice our happiness for;
Things we'd rather die for than give up,
Ideas that readily help us feel right,
But rarely make us happy.

The good news is
We can change our points of view
(We actually do it a lot more than we'll ever admit).
BUT,
And this is my main point.......

We cannot see our point of view while we're on it
Because that is where we are viewing from.
In order to see a limiting position,
We have, first, to get that we're on it
Then get off it.

This realisation is central to all my counselling and communicating,
And it is the hardest thing to achieve
Because nobody in their righteous mind wants either to admit they're on a position,
Or to get off anything they feel right about.
Left to our mind's devices,
We'd all rather be right than happy!

I deliberately set about moving people around,
I aim to change your viewing-point, so that --
a) You can see that you have been standing on a point-of-view; and
b) You can get a glimpse of what it looks like; and
c) You can get a different perspective on what you're looking at.

I aim to get you out of the box,
Even if only for the briefest of moments.
You can do it, consciously and willingly.
Here's how --
  • Acknowledge you are caught inside the box
  • Appreciate that the box does have an outside
  • Own that there's something right now that you feel right about, that there's something you're defending.
  • If you want to know what position you're on right now, it will be the opposite to those positional people you're resisting, the ones who keep showing up in your face to mess up your day.
  • Look at it, as objectively as you can. Don't think about it; just see it. The seeing is the movement.
  • Get the joke. If you can see the funny side of it, you're out! (and you will go back in again -- but that's OK. You know how to get out whenever you want to.)
Only from outside of the box,
When we jump off our point-of-view for a moment,
We see that we have available to us
Other, optional Points TO View.

Once we are outside the box
We can go anywhere,
And everywhere.
Now that's freedom.

Warning: Your mind isn't going to solve this problem; your mind is the problem.

There's a non-sense Zen riddle that goes something like this ---

A goose was once raised in a large bottle.
There came a time when the goose grew too large for the bottle.
Question: How do we get the goose out of the bottle
Without damaging either the goose or the bottle?
Answer: The goose is out.
(It was never in the bottle in the first place. I was mistaken about that.)
