WHEN YOU'RE LEFT WITH NO CHOICE -- CHOOSE

Byron KatieLoving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life “Whatever you have lived up to this point of your life is what it has taken for you to now find your freedom." Nothing's been wasted. Nothing went wrong. The opposites of freedom you have experienced are states of Mind. Time to get out of your locked-up mind. Freedom is a context; a way of being, that gives a deep “Yes” to what ever comes next.

Up until now we've had a limited view that we couldn't see. No-one can see their point of view while they're on it because that is where we are viewing from. That's why we're given the gift of others, to show us what we can't see of ourselves, by ourselves.

A wise friend may point out to you a position that's limiting your freedom, but in order to see for yourself, you must first get that your point of view exists; secondly that you're stuck on it, and thirdly find a way to look at it from another viewpoint.

Then move around and find other viewpoints to see from for a while, then move on.....

There are a lot of things we may have no choice about (and we could also be wrong about that, too), but we will never truly know what they are until we chose to unconditionally embrace the inevitable. Even when there's no choice, we have an infinite power to choose what is; all it needs is Willingness to say “Yes” to what we've formerly deemed unacceptable. That's where our ego righteously jacks up -- "NO WAY!!!!"

If you obey your ego at this point, you remain a victim. In fact every time you obey the dictates of your ego, you're a victim -- of your own creating!!!!

Freedom is finally discovered in the absence of choice and in the exercise of our ability in every circumstance to choose, especially when it means deliberately and wilfully choosing the only option open to us. It's the choosing of the only option available that gives us power in the matter.

I have no choice but to choose.......

How's that for irony?

TO KNOW THE WORLD, KNOW YOURSELF

We desperately need a new model for the care and maintenance of the human bodymind. Not only for ourself, but for our tribe. Our Illness-Care industry is reeling from mismanagement, undernourishment and neglect, and we're lurching toward the edge of an aged-care precipice.

Boffins are constantly exhorting people to change to illness-preventing lifestyles. But urging people, especially young ones, to practise moderate exercise, to abstain from alcohol and tobacco and harder drugs, to adopt a sensible diet, thought awareness and stress management isn't grabbing a huge following. Parents are farming out their responsibilities to their kids to the extent that a scary number of teens are mentally and emotionally wild-carded before they get to 18. It's not a pretty picture, and the medium- and long-term prognosis is even worse. We're seemingly heading for a social train-wreck.

Why? It's not for lack of information. I think it's lack of Motivation. A positive lifestyle requires that you balance and tend your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual growth, day in and day out for decades if you want to ensure the full benefit of health. But the consequences of our choices, whatever they are, may not show up for decades yet. We always pay for early inattention and mistakes by a decline that generally doesn't show overt symptoms until around late middle age. It's hard to persuade anyone, including yourself, to discipline yourself  and do something proactive today in order to reap a reward twenty or thirty years from now.

So what would it take to improve your motivation to get off your arse and do something in your own intelligent best interests? I can find only one answer: reinvent how you think about your human body/mind. Your attitude to your self is mirrored in the way you treat everyone and everything "else". For people to shift their behaviour toward self-care and heightened well-being, we don't need just compliance with standard prevention; we need compassion and kindness. There also has to be a drop in our predilection to drugs and surgery as shortcut approaches to relieving suffering.

Over the course of history, there have been four major models of the body:
1) The body as a collection of Nature's basic elements (the medieval conception of the four humours is an example).
2) The body as the temple of the soul.
3) The body as an expression of the life force (the Chinese concept of Chi is an example).
4) The body as a machine.

Depending on which model your personal culture accepts, you tend to approach illness and wellness in different ways. A doctor might advise a patient to undergo surgery or chemotherapy, pray to God as opposed to taking a pill, strengthening his Chi, making merit, or correcting imbalances in chakras. Each of these approaches has a lot to recommend it. But none on its own holds a way out of the dead-end we've got ourselves into.

In a Western-cultured place like Australia, the body-as-machine model has prevailed for a long time thanks to the reductionist methods of science. Machines are repaired by specialist mechanics who tinker with its defective parts, and that's basically what doctors do in their practices.

But it's obvious that your body isn't a machine. Your body is alive, for one thing. For another, exercise makes it stronger, whereas a machine, if used more often, begins to wear out. Your body/mind is a bio-organism that is inseparable from other parts of the same bio-organism. It can heal itself. It's a self-organising and self-regulating process. It also has access to intuition, a connection to the context of things going on at a deeper level – a quality not available to machines.

Yet the biggest flaw in the machine model of medicine, as I see it, is its rejection of the mind-body-spirit connection. I don't think that's spiritual chauvinism; I think embracing it in a curriculum would make training too long and complicated to churn out fixit graduates at the rate we need them. Medicos in training do learn a bit about psychosomatic disorders, but there's an implication that they're the result of the patient's imagination, and best left to shrinks (ie. more specialists).

This situation hasn't changed much in medical school, sad to say, but a surge in alternative and integrated medicine has brought the mind-body connection a little more out into the open, particularly in areas of Australia where there exists a supportive general culture of awakening consciousness.

This development of medicine is so important that a fourth model of the body is being formulated as we speak: an Integrated Model.

In this Integrated model of medicine, every cell is regarded as intelligent. The body holds and works interdependently through a constant stream of information that reaches every cell.

Ego is another matter. It ignores these cosmic conversations, makes up laws of its own and stories to support them. Self-centred ego/mind interferes and spends far too much time sending energy in directions opposite to the natural flow. Ego IS the problem.

Homeostasis - a state of dynamic balance - represents health. Inflammation, as yet not fully understood, represents the state of imbalance, separation and cross-purposes, leading to many if not most diseases. A person's habits, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviour are the key to well-being, since messages from any bunch of cells, especially the brain, affect the whole body. The brain plays a critical role in the feedback loops that maintain homeostasis, yet at every level, down to the expression of your genes, feedback repeats the same pattern of input and output. To put it bluntly – positive input promotes well-being; negative input impairs well-being.

The advantages of an Integrated model for the body/mind can be summarised in a few key points:
  • - Self-care becomes the primary care, not reliance on drugs and surgery from a doctor.
  • - Beliefs and attitudes assume the same status as physical input, such as food and exercise.
  • - Genetic consequences of lifestyle habits is now proven, extending our perception of the benefits of positive lifestyle changes. What we eat in our teens will genetically affect our babies a few years later.
  • - As you cultivate the role of Awareness in your moment-to-moment life, positive lifestyle changes won't need years to show benefits; you'll notice differences immediately.
  • - Most chronic disorders become preventable through routine maintenance of the whole system. This includes heart disease, diabetes and probably the vast majority of cancers.
  • - Mind-oriented practices like meditation improve well-being throughout the system, all the way down to the genetic level.
There is abundant and mounting evidence that all of these things are true, which means that an Integrated Model has reality on its side, more so than the old standalone machine model.

I referred a moment ago to your body/mind as a process. That was very deliberate. Your body is a concentration of processes, things and no-things coming together into be-ing: your body is not a thing. Well-being depends on finding your flow, in terms of a relaxed but aware mental state, a steady upbeat mood about your life, following the natural rhythm of rest and activity, nourishing ingestion of food and drink and excretion of wastes, taking realistic, practical steps to reduce stress, respecting the need for a good night's sleep, avoiding toxins, stimulating your body's natural defence systems, and relying on your body's innate intelligence.

It's the last point about realising that your body knows best what's going on with you, tells you what's happening (if you'll only listen), and has a good plan in place for restoring natural balance, that will radically change your behaviour. Your own basic attitude, and one you should impart to your children in everything you say and do, should be a reliance on the intelligence, awareness and knowing that is innate in every cell. There is no separation between you and the universe. Energy and thought (as distinct from “thoughts”) are in continuous interaction 24/7. No-one and no thing is an island.

Instead of seeing the body as a machine that, like a new car, must deteriorate over time, we should see it as a system that learns, adapts, and improves over time. In short, we need to let the body take care of us, for that is what it's actually doing, if we will only let it.

Here's a ridiculous question. Have you never considered sitting or lying down quietly with your body, asking its advice and noting carefully the sensations it sends you?

To me, that is less ridiculous than going to see an almost complete stranger and asking him to “give you something”. No body knows you better than your own body.

The one thing this amazingly self-sufficient system of yours needs from you is better attention and input.
Behold a few things that constitute better input:
- Being self-aware.
- Practising whatever connects you to contentment with what-is.
- Being more relaxed and accepting.
- A strong self-esteem, a sense of worthwhile-ness.
- Being of service to others, giving.
- Showing generosity of spirit.
- Loving, nurturing, supportive, challenging relationships.
- Any activity that makes you feel light in mind and body.
- Taking time to play, and having a playful attitude.
- Not stressing out other people.
- Devoting yourself to projects that have real meaning and purpose for you.
- Expanding your awareness and experience. Growing and maturing from the inside.
- Being comfortable with your inner world.
- Working through negative emotions like anger, envy, and fear.
- Self-acceptance.
- Reverence for Nature.
- Connection with a higher power, whatever that may be for you.

As you can see, almost none of this is advice will you hear in a doctor's office, and you sure won't find it in any of the waiting room reading material.

This new way of regarding body/mind goes far beyond standard prevention, which is based mostly on reducing risks. Of course it's good to avoid risks, but thinking in terms of what can go wrong feeds fear, and fear is a very primitive and clumsy motivator over the long run.

Becoming happier and more fulfilled day by day is a much better motivator, and not bad as a protection against terminal despair. Upgrade your conception of the body to include everything that is mentally, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually fulfilling.

Look after your body/mind. It's your best means of eavesdropping on God.

What do you think?

PS. My thanks to Dr. Deepak Chopra for his inspiration.

IS NOW OK?...... OR IS THERE SOME BETTER TIME?

Sailor” Bob Adamson said one day - “What's all this crap about 'trying to live in the Here and Now'? How can you NOT live Here in the Now?

Try this instead – try to get out of Here; try to break out from Now. Come on, try it. Try to live back two minutes ago. You can recall bits of it, but you're recalling it here/now. You can't go back and live in the past because you're locked in here/now. It doesn't matter where or when you go, you cannot be anywhere but here and now. If you're doing guilty (past) or worry (future), you're doing it now! If you go to Bali or Timbuktu, when you get there, that will be your “Here”. So why go searching to find something you're already in, and can't get out of?????

Give up the search; it's the searching that is stopping you from getting it. Step in to the shade, put down your baggage, and sit down. Loosen up and be open in the heart.

Ego thinks lot, but always at the expense of conscious awareness. While you're in your churning and turning mind, you have no hope of connecting with your Present Awareness. You can't think about what you're going to have for lunch AND be present at the same time. Try it. It's not possible, is it? You have to switch back and forth. You have to drop out of awareness for as long as you give your attention over to thinking. You cannot think and be aware at the same time.

There is one place your mind just cannot ever be – Here/Now. It's not possible, despite those who'll tell you they can do it. Your mind can only notice that something has already occurred, and it can only deal with one thing at a time. Sure, it can flick its attention back and forth quickly, but still only one thing at a time. John Lennon noticed - “Life is what's happening while you're making other plans.”

Mind can never be in the Present, but it sure clogs up Now with its future/past fantasies. And fantasies are all that they are. Past and Future do not exist -- unless you think about them. Surrender to the Present, the only reality -- inescapable.

HAPPINESS IS.......

What kind of Happiness are you looking for? I know of two kinds – one is yogic and the other is tantric -- and I've had the good fortune to explore both alternatives – The one we usually explore first is based on the false assumption of Separation. It is Happiness as an opposite of unhappiness. The second kind comes to some with later emotional maturity; it is the kind of Happiness that is the ABSENCE of unhappiness?

The first kind of happiness I sought was the Happiness that is the opposite of Unhappiness. That journey took me through states of doing, performances of cheerfulness, exhilaration, joy, mirthfulness, rejoicing, rapture, ecstasy, airiness, ardour, ebullience, enthusiasm, exuberance, fervour, gaiety, get-up-and-go, high spirits, hilarity, playfulness, vivacity; joviality, pleasantness; flippantness, frivolousness, and tricksiness. Whew! All pretty exhausting, I have to say, and the other side of the same coin – unhappiness – always lurked nearby, ready to pounce any time I dropped my guard.

Maybe it's an age thing, but in later years I've opted for the other alternative – Happiness as “the absence of unhappiness”. It hasn't come easily and the journey has been interesting to say the least. This kind of happiness is characterised by states of being - like contentedness, wholeness, peace of mind, satisfaction; wellbeing; blissfulness, warm joy, self-contentment and deep gratitude.

I wish I'd discovered this kind of happiness a lot earlier: but then I would have missed out on stuff like chronic anxiety, depression, blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. Hmm. Well, I did ask for wisdom........

Old habits die hard – but - Happiness as the ABSENCE of unhappiness. Are you willing to let go of Unhappiness? Yes? Completely?

PERSONALITY - PERSONALLY SPEAKING....

I read this post on the internet a few days ago:-

Was wondering if anyone else been through this? I've been going through this for what seems an eternity now although it's not been 2 years yet and I'm starting to panic that my life has been stripped bare and there is no sign of anything changing soon.

Up until a few months ago I seriously thought I was going nuts as my personality just vanished into thin air and even now I'm still not too sure about who I really am. This is the hardest thing I've been through in my life and I'm really struggling to keep plodding on as I wake up every day with absolutely nothing to look forward too, the depression has been fairly intense recently and no matter what I try just now every project just seems to fail.
I keep reading about how you just need to keep going through this but I'm not sure if I have the mental strength to cope with this much longer, I feel like a prisoner in solitary confinement that has been locked up and forgotten about.
If you could offer any advice coping I'd be eternally grateful.
PS apologies for sounding so bloody miserable.

OK. I'm so glad to meet you at last. Let's look at this “I” you keep referring to. Is that that the one you see in the mirror and say “That's me?” Well, what if you're wrong about that? I mean, it's only “you” if you buy into another thought that says “Yes, that's me”. And who's doing that thinking anyway – you? I don't think so.
Take a step backwards – this “you” that is doing the thinking --- what is aware of that “you” and the thinking it is doing? What is that Awareness? Does it care? Or is it just Aware? Without thinking?

Close your eyes for a few seconds and say softly to yourself “I am”. Is there any doubt about that? No? Of course not. You certainly are. Anything “you” tries to add after “I am...” might be a matter for conjecture, but there's no doubt that you ARE. There is a pure awareness there, is there not? Yes. Can you see it? No? Can you hear it? No. Can you touch it? No. But it is there, isn't it? Just Awareness. Nothing else.

So what is this bad dream you think you're having, yeah, the one you label “depression”? I've got one of those, too. But what is it? Just a bunch of shitty feelings that are arising in that Awareness. There is Awareness, and there is a bad dream that this awareness is conscious of; two quite separate things.

Now what if you are not the bad dream – the “personality”? What if you are the Awareness? Then the personality, which has only appeared to you over time, could dis-appear and the Awareness would still be. Yes? That would be who you are. Your personality is just a belief --- “I am my personality” = “The world is flat”.

My “I” has a belief “I am a failure”. So this committed “failure” is freaking out about the possibilities and dangers of failing? Is that an example of me getting in my own way? No wonder I get the shudders!

Consider letting go of this “personality” you lovingly hand-crafted, and without it allowing authenticity to show up instead. Why have you tried so hard to manufacture an image of what you already are? What else is “personality” but an image you want to see in the mirror? How about being what you are instead? And that might be scary for a minute or two because you have no idea yet just how beautiful you are. You've never yet given yourself a chance to show up. This “personality” you've concocted has always got in the way. Ditch it.

I look at “personality” and see something you thought your parents, teachers, partners, friends and sundry others wanted, but who are you? I want to know who you are, not your freaking mind-made personality!

Mind, the maker of all illusions, is an appearance – it appears to be real, and so does everything – everything it creates. But because it appeared, it's terrified of it and its creations (incl. “you”) disappearing again. So it takes a hostage -- you – the Awareness-you that never disappears. The servant kidnaps the master.

Time to break free.

When you're ready......

IF YOU WANT TO REAP A HARVEST, START SOWING (WHAT YOU WANT TO REAP)....

If you want to live in a kinder, more compassionate world, start quietly sowing seeds of kindness. If you're sick of niggardly behaviour, stop practising separation.

Acts of kindness are steps into the unknown. The beauty of them is that they can be as small or as large as you feel comfortable with. No matter what they are, genuine acts of kindness increase feelings of wellbeing in both the giver and the receiver. They are an act of Connection, satisfying one the most basic of human needs.

One unexpected act of kindness, one word of encouragement, can brighten someone's day, and will be paid forward to others you'll never meet. It could even change a life forever. You never know, and that's the glory of it.

What's even more extraordinary about giving kindness is – a) Kindness works best when you do it selfishly, for the feeling of freedom and space it gives yourself; and – b) it need not cost you a cent.

I wanted to visit a friend who was due to have surgery in a small private hospital in the Adelaide seaside suburb of Glenelg, not an area I know well. I caught public transport to the main street, thinking there would be signage on the streets to the hospital. Alas, I was wrong about that, and got hopelessly lost. I stopped a young couple who were walking their dog and asked for directions. They didn't know either. After wandering for another 10 minutes a car drove up behind me and honked. It was the young man I'd spoken to earlier. He'd gone home, looked up the map, and come looking for me. He drove me to the hospital. I don't know his name, but his kindness made the day for both of us.

Have you ever been in line to get coffee and the person in front of you pays for your bill? It makes you feel pretty great, doesn't it? And it makes you want to pass that feeling on to someone else, like I'm doing with you now. The pond-ripple effect of just one small act of kindness can make a positive difference in so many people’s lives! Today, I'm asking you to take the time to do something nice for someone else, and the happiness will continue to spread. Join me by doing something small just to make someone’s day that little bit brighter.

[Slip Into Spring/The Harvest – Bill Whelan – 5:01]

When you think about a random act of kindness you can do today, remember these 3 things:

1) Anyone can make a difference. 8-year-old Katelyn Indelicato heard about a local man who was shot and paralysed as an innocent bystander in a drive-by shooting. She wanted to help him any way she could. She emptied her own piggy bank and raised money to pay for a physical therapy session for a complete stranger who was going through a tough time. “Anyone can make a difference,” Katelyn said. “You can be more than what you are right now. You can do more than what you’ve already done.” Can't you?

12 years ago my daughter had collapsed with undiagnosed pneumonia and was near death in a coma in Melbourne's St. Vincent's Hospital. I drove from country Gippsland in the motor home I owned at the time and was desperately looking for a parking spot. Found one! In my highly disturbed state, though, I misjudged the manoeuvre and wiped a wing mirror off a very expensive 4WD. Flustered, I was struggling to write a note for the owner when he turned up. He took one look at his vehicle, a second look at my face, and said quietly, "Are you going to the hospital?" I nodded. He said, "Forget this. Go."

I've not seen him since, but I doubt I shall ever forget him, and what he did for me that day.

2) A single small act of goodwill has the potential to make a huge difference. In 1963, Edward Lorenz presented a hypothesis to the New York Academy of Science: A butterfly, he said, could flap its wings and set molecules of air in motion, which would move other molecules of air, in turn moving more molecules of air—eventually capable of starting a cyclone on the other side of the planet. He was laughed out of the conference, his hypothesis preposterous. More than thirty years later, The Butterfly Effect was found to be authentic, accurate, and viable.

Just like the flap of a butterfly’s wings can cause a cyclone, an act of kindness by one person can make the world a more liveable place. How many times in your life have you received an unexpected “Thank-you” note for something kind you hardly remember doing? Not often, I'll bet. You can change that today. A short note or email to say “Thank you” to someone you met recently can engender a tidal wave of good feelings that may be out of all proportion to the original act. That's the multiplier power of Gratitude. And you can start it all by yourself.

3) Don’t forget to pass it on. It feels so great when someone goes out of their way to do something nice for you, doesn’t it? Pass that feeling on by doing a good deed for someone else because kindness is like a snowball that’s rolling down a hill. Each unselfish act or word is another snowflake that greets the others… creating something much larger than itself in the process.

POSTSCRIPT: I think the world has quite enough arseholes who blatantly seek some payoff for their “good deeds”. You can multiply your kindnesses exponentially by making absolutely sure that as few people as possible know what you've done. If the kindness you're giving cannot possibly be repaid, try to organise it so that the receiver will never know who the kindness came from. I'm not entirely sure how this phenomenon works, but maybe by keeping yourself anonymous, you throw the focus of what you've done onto the deed itself, rather than the doer.

And how you feel afterwards can be your test of your authenticity. Arseholes give themselves away when they whine something like ....."After all I've done for him/her!!!" If you feel any hollowness, you'll know your seeds were sterile, and you've got some self-awareness to work on. If you feel a buzz of aliveness, you'll know the seeds you've sown will germinate, grow and yield a harvest.

I know of no better feeling than that.

WHO'S DOING IT?

What's happening for you? Whatever is happening, regardless of how you feel about it, is just happening. When a thought about what's happening jumps in, though, and we shrink our self to engage with the thought, a bodily feeling follows and, Bingo! We take it personally and emotion (thought-in-motion) gushes. And then we credit or blame someone else for that emotional geyser, and everything seizes up.

You might as well get used to the Ruthless Rule of Reality – We make ourselves feel. Our parents, our children, our enemies and even our friends will continue to press our hot buttons until each of us realises what it is in us that we won't go responsible for, yet. Much to our annoyance, these people keep showing us what's got us bushed and, I'm sorry to have to tell you, they're not going to change until we do; that's how much they love us.

The first step out of any blind alley you're in is to get that you (as in “ego”) are the sole cause – mark my words here – the sole cause of your own suffering. As Byron Katie said more than once – “Hurt feelings or discomfort of any kind cannot be caused by another person. Offence is never given; it is only taken. If no offence is taken, there is no offence. No one outside me can hurt me. That's not a possibility. It's only when I believe a stressful thought that I get hurt. And I'm the one who's hurting me by believing what I think. This is very good news, because it means that I don't have to get someone else to stop hurting me. I'm the one who can stop hurting me. It's within my power.

Question: When a thought is thought, who is the thinker? When a feeling is felt, who is the feeler?
Answer: There is no thinker or feeler. The thought we call Ego (because that's all Ego is) – the thought thought itself. The feeling felt itself into awareness. When the bag of thinking called ego jumps on board the thought/feeling, thinking “I am the thinker and feeler of this”, then suddenly the thought is thinking us, the feeling is feeling us, and we have forgotten what we are and become the victim of our own mistaken identity: we are neither the thinker, nor the thought, neither the emoter nor the emotion. We are an awareness of the thought being “thinked” and the emotion being felt. It has nothing to do with who-we-are, unless we get suckered by ego into thinking so.

The existence of any conflict in our life is entirely down to thoughts that create a fear for one's life. Mind, which is a bunch of thoughts, thinks “Without this thought I can't survive”, and suddenly you're off the freeway and into the wilderness. A ditch awaits you.

What is happening is just happening. What you're thinking and feeling is just happening in awareness. But when you let your “I” or “Me” jump in and get involved (try and stop them!) suffering arises.

By the way, you cannot stop a thought or a feeling arising. Try it! The more you try, the tighter you will spasm onto them. No one has ever been able to control his thinking or emotional reaction. Suppress or cover-up – maybe, but control – no, although some people may tell the story of how they have. I don't like their chances of living a healthy old age.

Around age 12 I got badly electrocuted and learned a valuable lesson about energy that's not flowing where it belongs. I learned that the harder I tried to let go, the harder it spasmed my muscles into a tighter grip. I had to relax and wait for the energy to let go of me. I learned that day to relax, remember what I am, drop trying to rid myself of the thoughts and feelings, and meet them instead with kindness and understanding. Then they let go of me.

I know I keep quoting certain people, but they say what I know so much better than I can. Like Byron Katie – “You are your only hope, because we're not changing until you do. Our job is to keep coming at you, as hard as we can, with everything that angers, upsets, delights, excites, attracts or repulses you, until you understand. We love you that much, whether we're aware of it or not. The whole world is about you.”

Life is good,
Life is kind
Life is very beautiful....
All that appears to be, to me
Is arising in me.
I” is not the body,
I” is not the mind;
I” is the Aware Presence
Within which these things I do find

HEALING - ANOTHER WAY

Nothing is real -- unless you think about it. Pain, anger, and frustration let us know when something's gotten out of whack. Is it the thoughts, or the thinking about those thoughts?

Thoughts are just thoughts, like cars passing in a busy street. They're not a problem until you step out into the traffic. It's the thinking that's the problem. Thoughts just pop in and out – around 50-80,000 of them every day. Most of them fly right on through, but some we latch onto and start thinking about. Then we either believe what we think about, or we question it: there's no other choice actually. Questioning our thoughts is the kinder way. Noticing what sticks and what we let go with detached curiosity always leaves us as wiser and more loving human beings.

Uninvestigated ideas and thoughts-in-motion (emotions) just arise in awareness all by themselves. They have no validity or potency until we believe in them in the moment. Byron Katie, in her book, “Loving What Is:” writes“A thought is harmless, unless we believe it. It’s not the thoughts, but our attachment to the thoughts – making them “ours”, that causes suffering. Attaching to a thought means believing that it’s true, without inquiring. A belief is a thought that we’ve been attaching to, often for years on end.”
One of the key principles of quantum physics is that the thoughts we identify with, latch onto and believe determine our version of reality. Early in the 1900′s they proved this beyond a shadow of a doubt with an experiment called the Double Slit experiment, a rather nasty piece of investigating science in which a lot of cats died. But they found something remarkable. They discovered, and were able to prove (thanks to the unsuspecting cats) that the determining factor of the behaviour of energy ‘particles’ at the quantum level, is the awareness of the Observer....... the spectator affects the game more than the players.

Who or what, though, is this spectator? Is it you? Is it me? Our individual consciousness? Almost, but not quite, although we do have a palpable secondary effect. But there is something else...... Human consciousness – that thing we've always mistakenly assumed is “I” and “Me” – think of it as a multi-sensory and feeling camera, and there is a camera-person looking through the viewfinder – through our “I” and “Me”. Whatever that watcher is, it is unlocatable, unseeable, inscrutable. But it is there. Simply aware. And that is who we truly are.

Thus the fusion of all thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and intentions that “I” hooks onto, which I will call the Human Consciousness for simplicity’s sake, is perpetually informing a
Quantum Consciousness that exists within every cell of us, and around us at each moment of our existence. That is who we really are, and that never goes away, no matter what happens. In the operating theatre, I am out to it – totally out of it – for 12 hours while they work on my heart, but all that while I still Am. Awareness doesn't go off duty – ever.
Another Way of seeing it........

I think it is absolutely clear that we must start to consider ourselves as something other than just a physical body, a mind, or even a spirit. To limit our awareness to this traditional perception is a bit like being at the seaside and seeing only the waves, and ignoring the ocean which gives them form, substance, and to which the waves return when they lose their form as a wave. Just as the ocean is “waving”, Awareness is “Barrie-ing”, and “you-ing”, and “tree-ing”, and.... and.... and.....

A thirsty desert bird was desperately looking for a drink of water. All he could find was some water in the bottom of a discarded jar. But he couldn't reach it; the neck was too narrow. He needed a new approach, or he would die. Suddenly he got an idea. He started picking up stones and dropping them into the jar until the water level rose to where he could get at it and drink his fill.

Some things just cannot be changed. In which case, maybe you need a new approach. Maybe if you stop believing everything you think about and feel about, it becomes much easier and more effective to shift away from your present fantasy of “What-I-am” // to seeing yourself as that Awareness that organises and manifests itself in every thought, feeling and form that arises within this awareness. To put it another way, be the pure awareness temporarily experiencing this level of reality through all its creations, including what we call “I”, “you”, “me” and “those”.

New quantum science evidence is clearly illustrating that Awareness is non-local and is independent of the brain. This means Awareness doesn’t need the brain, or the body for that matter, to exist. But it's a lot more fun to have these things, preferably in working order, to give us something entertaining to think about.

But we take the fun stuff too personally and get sick. The first step to healing is to allow the possibility that we are not who we've always thought we are – the body, mind and feelings we inhabit. We are that which created, and is thoughtlessly aware, of all that stuff -- we are a creation of the infinite energy all around and through us.

Consider also that we can consciously tap into this energy that we are, to promote healing in our body and mind, to become a more happy, healthy, vibrant and creative being. As soon as we start to connect to the infinite energy of creation and our own true nature as formless energy, then we start to become aware of these same energies passing throughout our body. This recognition begins healing. All we need to do is see it. There's nothing else to be done.

Byron Katie writes:-
If you put your hand into a fire, does anyone have to tell you to move it? Do you have to decide? No: When your hand starts to burn, it moves. You don’t have to direct it; the hand moves itself. In the same way, once you get that an untrue thought causes your pain, you move away from it.” Naturally.
