To a child,
Being an adult appears to be without doubt.
It's an act, a bluff.
That's why we waste so much energy in our teens
Trying to cover our doubts with Certainty;
We're trying to act "grown-up".
Most of us haven't yet fully matured beyond that point.
Maturity is the measure of how we handle our doubt.
I love my doubts (most of them, anyway);
They remind me of mystery and paradox
And put my "certainties" into a more realistic perspective.
My doubts prompt me to enquire,
And my intelligence grows.
After our mid-teens,
Faith and Belief are un-intelligent,
Except as prompts to examine our doubts.
