I find it extraordinary that horticulturalists and zoologists have known for ages
That when we forcefully squeeze, then freeze the evolution of a species,
And aglomerate the resultant mutations together into a mono-culture,
They become sitting ducks for pests and diseases.
Corn, cotton, wheat, apples, sheep and certain breeds of dogs
Are the obvious examples of species pushed to the brink of biological extinction,
Requiring enormous inputs of energy from us
And huge volumes of poisonous pesticides, fertilizers, fungicides and drugs
To fight their biological foes for them
And maintain their existence.
These are admittedly the worst possible examples,
But every living thing that man has interfered with,
Including himself,
Is subject to the same law.
Man does not have a large enough overview of anything
To truly know what he's doing.
There is a price, and it will be paid.
With so many allergies and other diseases of progress now proliferating,
And pests and diseases mutating faster than we we can find ways of killing them off --
How come we haven't joined the dots?
Or do we really think that human beings
Can somehow exempt ourselves from the principles of life?
How ignorant and arrogant can we get?
