“Sailor” Bob Adamson said one day - “What's all
this crap about 'trying to live in the Here and Now'? How can you NOT
live Here in the Now?
Try this instead – try to get out of Here;
try to break out from Now. Come on, try it. Try to live back two
minutes ago. You can recall bits of it, but
you're recalling it here/now. You can't go back
and live in the past because you're locked
in here/now. It doesn't matter where or when you go, you
cannot be anywhere but here and now. If you're doing guilty (past) or
worry (future), you're doing it now! If you go to Bali or Timbuktu,
when you get there, that will be your “Here”. So why go searching
to find something you're already in, and can't get out of?????
Give up the search; it's the searching that is stopping
you from getting it. Step in to the shade, put down your baggage, and
sit down. Loosen up and be open in the heart.
Ego thinks lot, but always at the expense of conscious
awareness. While you're in your churning and turning mind, you have
no hope of connecting with your Present Awareness. You can't think
about what you're going to have for lunch AND be present at the same
time. Try it. It's not possible, is it? You have to switch back and
forth. You have to drop out of awareness for as long as you
give your attention over to thinking. You cannot think and be
aware at the same time.
There
is one place your mind just cannot ever be – Here/Now. It's not
possible, despite those who'll tell you they can do it. Your mind can
only notice that something has already occurred, and it can only deal
with one thing at a time. Sure, it can flick its attention back and
forth quickly, but still only one thing at a time. John Lennon
noticed - “Life
is what's happening while you're making other plans.”
Mind
can never be in the Present, but it sure clogs up Now with its
future/past fantasies. And fantasies are all that they are. Past and Future do not exist -- unless you think about them. Surrender to the Present, the only reality -- inescapable.
