The
granddaddy of all our false-security fixes is our mind's overriding addiction to being right. The need to be right overrides everything else. The
Right/Wrong Game is the biggest security game in town! We'd even
rather be right than happy.
The game can be played many ways:
I
am right, therefore you are wrong.
You
are wrong, therefore I am right.
Everyone
else agrees that I'm right, therefore you're wrong
You
can't prove I'm wrong, therefore I am right.
You
can't prove to my satisfaction that you're right, therefore you're
wrong and I'm right.(Controllers) – I have the right, therefore
you're wrong.
(Victims)
I know I'm Wrong. So very Wrong! See how Right I am!
Finding something to be “right” about is THE major search area for people seeking a quick fix
of feeling secure. If we're really caught short, we may even find ourself being “right” about our
insecurities! Notice how vigorously we – a) defend them [I
have every right to be upset];
and b) wield them as weapons of control [You're making me
upset].
Here
is a truth: there has never been, and never will be, enough external
assurances of security to assuage the sneaking dread that we're not
going to make it. Because we fear we're not going to make it just as
we are, or just as It Is, we will never make it any other way. But we
keep hoping for some silver bullet that will make everything OK at
last.
So we put our trust in More things, Better things, and
Different things. And that doesn't work, not because those things are
“bad”, but because we're still coming from a ground being of
Insecureness. It was John Denver who said “Where
you're coming from is where you're going to.”
If you come from Insecurity, you can strive for More, Better and Different
until hell freezes over, but you're still going to feel your insecurities
– more, better and different insecurities.......
